New Milford Road Runners Club Hosts First Evening Run

Runners of all abilities came out for the first run of the New Milford Road Runners Club.

The New Milford Road Runners Club had their first run Thursday night. Five runners ranging in abilities--from seasoned marathoner to first time runner--hit the road for an easy run. Together they enjoyed a night of camaraderie, conversation and exercise.

Despite the seemingly low turnout, the Club is hopeful that they will be able to encourage more people to come out.

"We want people to know that they don't have to be runners to come out and run with us," Joe LoPorto said. "We encourage people who've never run before to join us. It all starts with one step."

All in attendance agreed that running promotes a healthy lifestyle and is cheaper than paying for a gym membership.

"And unlike a gym membership, we can be each other's personal trainers," LoPorto said.

For those who think that they can't do it, Thursday's run was a three mile run that ranged between 10 and 15 minute miles--a 'Couch to 5K' speed. And running burns a lot of calories.

The New Milford Road Runners Club was the brainchild of New Milford Education Foundation Board members Jim Prendergast and Joe LoPorto. Not only is it a fundraising arm of the Foundation, but both Prendergast and LoPorto wanted to bring the community together by promoting a healthy lifestyle.

"We'll attract more members," LoPorto said. "Every race starts with one step."
