Lori, FYI, I just emailed the New Jersey State Board of Education. Making this decision as a board, regarding potential future expense to the taxpayers is a violation of the Sunshine Act, is it not? I sent them a copy of this article, and will await their reply.

I would also like to state that I certainly hope that the voters in this town remember this when School Board Elections come again. The school system is overtaxed as it is, and they have already stated that adding apartments at that site would already exacerbate a bad situation. How dare they enter this "conceptual contract" while stating out of the other side of their mouths that New Milford can't handle this development. Part of the upsetting part of developing the United Water property is the absolute disruption it poses for our High School kids. To make them sit next to a construction site, with no A/C, with open windows, with noise and air pollution is deplorable. I remember being in that school, with no breeze, and having to shut the windows simply due to occasional lawn mowing. In the mean-time, our Superintendent has already had to defend and come up with a plan for corrective action for NMHS's test scores. I can't wait to see what the new school budget includes after this...Please New Milford, open your eyes, WIDELY.

Let me get this straight: New Milford voted down a Field of Dreams, at our expense, on land we ALREADY OWNED for free at David E. Owens School. Correct? On a piece of already mostly leveled land...Yes? Yet The Board of Ed thinks we want to PAY FOR clearing the United Water Property, leveling it, installing a field, parking, amenities and BUILDING A STADIUM?! With a "sizable donation"? This is the shadiest type of back door deal I have ever heard of in this town. This sizable donation likely does not include maintenance, and I doubt it will cover all our costs of construction.

Scooby is completely right. Having worked for a unionized grocery chain before, I can assure you that Shoprite is more than capable of keeping its employees employed, while any transition takes place. If those jobs are important to the workers, a temporary option will be made available to them.

Bonita, please look around you. We have a zillion banks, and between us, Dumont, Paramus, and all the surrounding towns, we have many, many, many open store fronts of places that have gone out of business. That old Shop Rite building isn't desirable to anyone but Shoprite, maybe. It is highly unlikely that the building left open, if Shoprite vacates, will find a use. SOME in town have mentioned they'd love to put our emergency services there. But all in all, that suggestion in and of itself would require a LOT of money New Milford doesn't have, just to make the building usable for this purpose. Going up and down the area by the newly proposed locations, you will see a LOT of SOD signs that contradict your desire to move the ShopRite to the North end of town. If you imagine this is a good thing for our town, in any capacity, and that ANY of this is being done with your taxpaying pocketbook in mind, please reconsider. This is a long, expensive, detrimental proposition that you will wind up paying for, in the long run.

This revised proposal unfortunately doesn't settle the issues I still find important. the ShopRite on River Road by Brookchester will become an abandoned eye sore. The people who rely on that grocery store (senior citizens, pedestrians) who moved to Brookchester for the convenience of ShopRite will now be left without. The increase in traffic at the North end of town would require major rehabilitation of River Road, Demarest Avenue, Main Street, and especially the intersection of Madison and Main Street. The construction, alone, will disrupt the High School for YEARS, kicking old contaminated dust in our children's faces, while they sit in unfiltered classrooms, having to choose between an open window, or stifling heat in summer months. We're not ready for the impact of this development, in any form.
