New Milford High School Students Hosted Senior Citizen Prom

Tri-M, the school’s music honors society, held their annual Senior Citizen Prom last week

New Milford High School's music honors society, Tri-M, held their annual Senior Citizen Prom last week. Tri-M and the NMHS Choral Ensemble spent all year fundraising for this special night which has become one of the community’s most anticipated events. This year art teacher Lauren Betinni and the Art Honors Society joined forces with Tri-M and the Choral Ensemble in helping prepare for the event. During the event the Choral Ensemble sang a mix of songs, from Dionne Warwick to Neil Diamond, all of which ended in a round of clapping and cheering. The idea for the Senior Citizen Prom first came to life four years go when music teacher Jane Swarctz and the Music Honors Society talked about creating a community service event. With the help of …

Whiz Kid: NMHS Senior Awarded College Scholarship

Berkeley College selected Angelica Barrado for the award

New Milford High School senior Angelica Barredo has received a scholarship to attend Berkeley College. Berkeley College President Dario A. Cortes, PhD, announced Barredo's scholarship. “We are proud to recognize the academic accomplishments of Angelica by awarding her a scholarship to attend Berkeley College,” said Dr. Cortes. “As a college that values diversity, fosters academic growth and recognizes the potential of each student, Berkeley College looks forward to welcoming Angelica to our campuses in the coming year.” Berkeley College scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors who demonstrate a high level of achievement in high school. Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Daisy Girl Scout Troop 4163 Accomplishments: These first graders at Gibbs School learned from Chris Schimel, a member of the VFW Auxiliary, how to be patriotic and what being an American really means. The girls then drew pictures to show how they feel about being American and those pictures will be given to local veterans. Whiz Kids' Keys to Awesomeness: "Troop 4163 proudly displayed their pictures of what it means to be an American," said Troop Leader Donna Colucci. "Thanks to Chris Schimel, the scouts' drawings will bring a smile to our veterans who fought for our freedom."

Whiz Kids: Gibbs School 4th Graders Selected for Statewide Writing Contest

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Mikaela Santos, Nicole DiGiorgio, Shane Morgan, Sabrina Wilson, Ryan Lally, Madison Ryan, Melissa Bowker, and Luke Barden. Accomplishments: These fourth graders at B.F. Gibbs School were selected for a state-wide writing contest called Celebrate New Jersey.  The following statement was provided by Stacy Novoshelski, B.F. Gibbs School media specialist: For the past six years, the 4th graders in New Milford have participated in a statewide writing contest called Celebrate NJ. For this contest, students choose one newspaper editor that they would like to become, and write a 200-word research article about New Jersey. Whiz Kids: Junior Girl Scout Troop 1506

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Junior Girl Scout Troop 1506 Accomplishments: The girls of Junior Troop 1506, fifth graders at Gibbs School, recently completed their Bronze Award which required each girl to commit to a minimum of 15 hours of community service on a specific project. The troop decided to help the food pantry based at Church of the Ascension. The girls discovered the pantry is in need of toilet paper and paper towels, and began collecting those items and donating them to the pantry. The girls started out with a goal of collecting 101 rolls but they kept upping their goal. At their final drop off, the girls' donations totaled 353 rolls. They will be honored on June 8 at the high school during an awards ceremony. Whiz Kids' Keys …

Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Brenton Prisendorf, a junior at New Milford High School and the newest junior member of the New Milford Fire Department Accomplishment: "Brenton chose to become an explorer two years ago after a very long lineage of firefighters," said his mother, Joanne Prisendorf.  "Once he turned 16, he became a junior firefighter." Brenton comes from a long line of firefighters--his great-grandfather was a Palisades  Park Volunteer Firefighter for about a decade, his grandfather is currently an active member with more than 50 years of service with the Palisades Park Fire Department.  Brenton's uncle and father were both members of the Palisades Park Fire Department until they moved and started their own families and both are…

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Sohum Sanghvi, Geography Bee First Place Winner and Stephen Pale, Finalist in the North Jersey Spelling Bee Accomplishment: Sanghvi returned for the second year in a row to the Geo Bee and emerged with first place this year while Pale made it to the final 26 in the spelling bee, beating out students from 130 other schools in Bergen, Passaic, Essex & Morris Counties. Whiz Kids' Keys to Awesomeness: The New Milford Board of Education honored both boys, who attend David E. Owens Middle School, for their amazing accomplishments at their March 21 meeting.

Whiz Kids: Mini Competition Team at Dance Dimensions

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: "The Minis" from Dance Dimensions Accomplishments: Dance Dimensions Mini Competition Team won first place on Saturday for their jazz dance at the Star Quest Competition which was held at the Bergen Academies in Hackensack. It was choreographed by Annette Romano-Merlini, the director of Dance Dimensions. Whiz Kids' Keys to Awesomeness: The Mini Team has been working hard all year to perfect their routines and have competed in several competitions already this year. The girls on this team study tap, jazz, ballet and lyrical dance several days at week at the Dance Dimensions studio on River Road in New Milford. They've also spent many hours in weekend rehearsals leading up to competition season.

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Pack 78 Bear and Wolf Scouts Accomplishments:  The Bears and Wolves from Pack 78 visited the New Milford Volunteer Ambulance Corp recently to go over first aid techniques and talk about emergency preparedness. The scouts reviewed what they should do if faced with a number of different scenarios such as a fire, being in a car or school bus accident, falling into a body of water either from the bank of a lake or in a capsized boat and what to do after falling down a flight of stairs or off a ladder. Through role play, the Bears demonstrated what should be done in these situations. NMVAC members Audrey Schrader and Joseph MacDiarmid answered questions and gave the boys valuable life lessons. Whiz Kids: Junior Troop 1506

Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Junior Girl Scout Troop 1506 Accomplishments: The girls of Junior Troop 1506, fifth graders at Gibbs School, have been trying to make their world a more "green" place by leading the effort to recycle crayons at Gibbs. They were working on the national Girl Scout Journey program called "Get Moving" which taught them about making their surroundings a more environmentally friendly place. The girls worked hard to decorate collection boxes and make signs to put around the school to make students and faculty aware of the crayon collection effort. The troop handles the collection boxes and manages the shipments of the crayons back to the main facility.  The troop also decided to help the food pantry based at Church of…
