Hackensack Riverkeeper Supports Development of United Water Property

Citing land as "post-industrial," Hackensack Riverkeeper says United Water property is not considered a critical habitat and sides with Subrizi in favoring Hekemian's original plan for development.

Hackensack Riverkeeper, Bill Sheehan, told Patch that while it would have been "wonderful" if New Milford had been able to acquire the United Water property for open space preservation, the land itself is "post-industrial" and, as a whole, offers no environmental protection against flooding, as SOD (Stop Over Development) contends. "While I agree that 221 residential units plus a shopping center is a helluva lot to shoehorn into 13 acres, if the redevelopment plan comports with stormwater and flood-protection regulations, there is no good reason for our organization to oppose it," Sheehan said. Although the United Water property exists within the watershed property of the Hackensack River, Sheehan upholds, "The property was used for many …

Letter to the Editor: Affordable Housing At Any Cost?

SOD's Communication Chair asks why towns with affordable housing units built before COAH laws went into effect cannot qualify to satisfy COAH obligations.

New Jersey’s Council on Affordable Housing (COAH) requirements are killing small towns across this state. Don’t get me wrong: I fully embrace the concept of affordable housing. There are many communities that do not have affordable housing within their borders and have not done anything to try to reach that goal. This is not a case of NIMBY. This is the simple reality that many older communities do not have land left to develop. They may have significant numbers of truly affordable housing units within their borders which do not qualify toward their COAH obligation simply by the virtue that they were built before the COAH obligations went into effect.  So, along come the big, bad developers who have no interest in constructing affordable …

Thank you Lori, well said, and yes it's time to save this little open space. I hope we prevail and I hope our M&C doesn't get another chance to rezone this property to commercial as the Mayor and certain Council members want. SOD!   more ›

Lurings, Curfews and Hurricane Sandy Dominate This Week In Local News

Incidents of lurings throughout the Borough cause Chief Papapietro to issue Halloween curfews; town readies itself to Hurricane Sandy.

New Milford Police partner with the New Milford School district to talk to students about luring and give them a chance to voice their concerns. Chief of Police Frank Papapietro was present at last Monday's meeting of the Mayor and Council to speak about his department's investigation into the recent reported incidents of luring and answer questions from concerned residents. Girls report that a man who asked them for directions reportedly matched the description of the man allegedly involved in the attempted luring in Westwood. In light of attempted lurings, Chief Papapietro issues 8 p.m. curfews for Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. In the first step towards rebuilding the ranks depleted by retirements and departures, two new police officers take oath…

Christie Orders Reservoirs Lowered

In advance of Sandy, Governor orders reservoirs lowered and flood gates opened.

Hearing the pleas of local officials and their constituents devastated by the flooding that followed Hurricane Irene, Governor Chris Christie has announced that he has ordered the reservoirs to be lowered in advance of Hurricane Sandy to mitigate any potential flooding. Hurricane Sandy, christened 'Frankenstorm' because of its unique characteristics, has been described by weather services as a cross between a hurricane and a winter storm, packing the potential to deliver a minimum of 4-5 inches of rain with 30-40 mile per hour winds. The reservoirs that will be lowered are the Woodcliffe Lake-Lake Tappan-Oradell Reservoir system operated by United Water in Bergen County; the Charlottesburg Reservoir, operated by the City of Newark; the …

And they (UW) will use that as their basis for appeal. That our Zoning Board, if they deny the application, is taking revenge, on behalf of the taxpayers of NM, for the flooding that they will intentionally cause.   more ›

Legislators Urge United Water To Lower Reservoirs

In anticipation of Hurricane Sandy, Gordon, Wagner and Eustace ask United Water to lower the reservoir levels before storm hits.

District 38 legislators have appealed to United Water to lower the reservoir in advance of Hurricane Sandy, a nor'easter that the National Weather Service forecasts to hit Bergen County between Monday and Tuesday. In a letter sent Friday to Jim Glozzy, Vice President and General Manager of United Water, Senator Robert Gordon, Assemblywoman Connie Wagner and Assemblyman Timothy Eustace asked that he help to "mitigate some of the potential losses" by lowering the reservoirs before the storm hits. "It is our belief that United Water can help to mitigate some of the potential losses by lowering the reservoirs before significant rainfall begins," they wrote. Reminding him of the devastating effects the floods that followed Hurricane Irene had …

As of 4:15pm Saturday, United Water has yet to comply with the Governor's mandate to release water from the Oradell Reservoir. From my view, the Hackensack River is at peak low tide and there is no indication that they are going to do anything, at this time. I will be videotaping the river as soon as the tide shifts in order to prove that they are violating a direct order from the Governor.   more ›

Subrizi Urges Christie To Lower Reservoirs

With Sandy headed our way, Subrizi urges Christie to order the reservoirs be lowered in advance of the storm.

Mayor Ann Subrizi has sent a letter to Governor Chris Christie asking him to lower the reservoirs in advance of Hurricane Sandy, a nor'easter that the National Weather Service forecasts to hit Bergen County between Sunday and Tuesday. "The full capacity of the United Water Oradell Reservoir is 23.16 ft.," Subrizi said. "It is currently at 18.07 ft." Subrizi states that it is not only important that the reservoirs be lowered to make room for the rain, "but more importantly, to make room for the runoff that will surely occur on the following days." Prior to the arrival of Hurricane Irene, Christie agreed to order the lowering of the reservoirs to ease flooding, and Subrizi is hoping that he will do it once again. "This could be the decision …

Dear Ms.Cotter, I ABSOLUTELY understand your dilemma - since I have shared my share of the burden of such decisions over the years! Mayor Subrizi must live far above the level of the Hackensack River away form the lowlands of southern New Milford. As 53 year residents of New Milford we have been regualarly flooded by the reservoir being lowered combining with storms and were even evacuated by …   more ›

United Water Not At Fault For 2007 West Nyack Flooding

Jury Finds Lake DeForest and Lake Tappan dams did not contribute to flooding

Editor's note: Many residents in New Milford and the other towns along the Hackensack River have been paying close attention to this case. Here is the court's ruling. A Rockland County Supreme Court Jury found on Friday morning that United Water did not contribute to flooding in West Nyack and River Vale, NJ in April 2007.  Over a 31-hour period on April 15 and 16, 2007 between six and eight inches of water fell, flooding dozens of properties. The jury deliberated for a day and a half before reaching its decision. “The jury got it wrong,” said Orangeburg Attorney Kevin Mulhearn, who represented more than 50 residents and business owners. “I think today’s decision is a blow for the little man and a boon for the corporate conglomerate that …

So much for honesty and empathy...typo in post above. The jury definitely got it wrong and I feel for the plaintiffs. I know it is a long shot, but perhaps you can review the current on-going battles that United Water is engaged with towns in NJ...perhaps you can use some of the information in the appeal. Good luck!   more ›

United Water Property Dominates Discussion This Week In Local News

While the Zoning Board continues its hearings on the proposed development of the United Water property, SOD marches to protest rezoning the property.

Over 100 residents turn out to turn up the heat on stopping over development by rezoning the United Water property. SOD urges Mayor and Council not to rezone the United Water property and let the application run its course through the Zoning Board. Subrizi says without rezoning, all control over the United Water property will rest with the courts when Hekemian appeals, leaving New Milford entirely out of the decision making process. SOD Executive Director, Miriam Pickett, asks citizens to unite against rezoning the United Water property. Alleged burglar, Jeremy Buttigieg, arrested at the food court of the Garden State Plaza after eluding police for a month. Mayor Says 'My Party Is New Milford'

Subrizi says without rezoning, all control over the United Water property will rest with the courts when Hekemian appeals, leaving New Milford entirely out of the decision making process.

Responding to concerns posed by the audience during Monday's Mayor and Council meeting, Mayor Ann Subrizi assurred residents that regarding the issue of the development of the United Water property, "My party (affiliation) is New Milford." Subrizi's statement came on the heels of SOD's protest march organized to air their opposition to the Mayor and Council's proposal to rezone the United Water property. SOD is requesting that the Mayor and Council wait until the application has run its course through the Zoning Board before any consideration is given to rezoning the property. Hekemian's proposed development calls for a 70,500 sq. ft. supermarket, a 4300 sq. ft bank, a 221 unit multi-housing complex and a four-story parking garage.   …

SOD Urges Mayor and Council: Say No To Rezoning

SOD urges Mayor and Council not to rezone the United Water property and let the application run its course through the Zoning Board.

SOD delivered this message to the Mayor and Council at Monday's meeting: "Say no to rezoning; keep New Milford green." Prior to the start of Monday's Mayor and Council meeting, more than 100 people, many of whom brought their children, lined the sidewalk in front of Borough Hall holding signs saying "No Rezoning," and "Keep New Milford Green," in support of SOD (Stop Over Development) whose mission is to keep the United Water property from being developed. "Rezoning the property is giving the developer what he wanted from the beginning," SOD Executive Director, Miriam Pickett said. "We need to let the Zoning Board do their job and let the application run its course." "Look around you at all these people," Pickett continued. "This is proof …
