Sandy 'Wreaked Havoc' on 65 Percent of NJ, Poll Says

One in five residents said they felt forced out of their homes by the storm.

Superstorm Sandy made an impact on approximately two-thirds of the state, according to results from a Rutgers-Eagleton Poll released Tuesday. An even higher percentage (94 percent) of the 1,228 polled New Jersey residents reported that they lost power at some point during or after the storm. About 65 percent of those polled said they remained without power for at least five days.  "Two-thirds of New Jersey residents were affected when Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the Garden State three weeks ago," a press release about the poll said. Approximately one in five residents said they were forced out of their homes by the storm, with about 6 percent of residents telling pollsters they were still not able to permanently return. "We already …

Sandy Poses Unique Challenges to NJ Candidates

Politicians said this election season was 'very difficult' because of storm.

After millions of New Jersey residents spent most of last week without power, gas, and even lost their homes, Tuesday’s general election was likely the farthest from their minds. But for politicians who have continued to campaign through the storm, the election has remained a focus. “It’s been a very, very difficult procedure because of the storm,” Essex County Freeholder Vice President Patricia Sebold said. Sebold is the Democratic chairwoman in Livingston and has helped local candidates with their own races. She said her candidates have struggled to reach voters as power outages have stopped their printer, in Irvington, from producing mailers. “I’ve never experienced anything like this ever, in all my years of being involved in politics…

Sandy's Aftermath In New Milford In Photos

There was barely a street in New Milford that did not see destruction from Sandy in downed trees, wires and poles.

New Milford spent the better part of Tuesday assessing the damage that Sandy brought to town. Although every resident heaved a huge sigh of relief that the anticipated flood did not occur, Columbia Street was dry at noon despite the full moon tidal surge, the rest of the town saw hundred year old trees toppled by Sandy's strong wind, taking street lights, telephone poles and wires with them, making many borough streets impassable. Tuesday saw residents cleaning debris from their yards and making sure their neighbors were okay. Despite the mess, despite the damage, despite the loss of power, residents were in great spirits helping each other out and stopping to exchange stories about Sandy with each other and asking for any news about other…

NJTransit System Reports 'Unprecedented Devastation'

Extensive damage could delay service restorations across rail and bus linking NJ, NY and Philadelphia

The nation's largest statewide public transportation system says it faces a massive repair and restoration effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. NJTransit, consisting of 12 commuter train lines, 3 light rail lines and 261 bus routes, suffered "unprecedented devastation" from the storm, according to James Simpson, New Jersey's transportation commissioner and chairman of the NJTransit board. The system normally provides 895,000 weekday trips, servicing 164 rail stations, 61 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops. Little of that activity was evident on Tuesday, however. Instead, transit crews had begun an extensive damage review. “With the break of daylight, NJ TRANSIT began to inspect and assess the full extent of the damage," …

Local Emergency Services On Sandy: Winds Made For Dangerous Conditions

Winds caused PSE&G to pull their repair crews and kept emergency services working through the night responding to calls of downed trees and wires.

During Monday's tropical storm Sandy, New Milford's police desk answered over 100 calls reporting fallen trees and large branches, downed poles and wires, and transformer explosions, Police Chief Frank Papapietro reported to Patch. Papapietro also heads the Borough's Emergency Services. "I've weathered many storms," Papapietro said. "But that wind was the most dangerous I have ever seen." So dangerous, in fact, that during the height of the storm Papapietro made the decision to direct his patrol cars to find a safe place within their sector to park and not drive unless responding to a call. "Everyone's safety was my top priority last night," Papapietro said. "Including that of my patrol crew on the road." "I wanted to make sure that …

Morning After Clean-Up From Sandy

WIth trees and power lines down throughout town, Tuesday will show just how much damage Sandy wrought.

Sandy has blown out of town littering New Milford's side streets and thoroughfares with the debris of trees and branches, downed power lines, and many, many power outages. As of midnight, PSE&G is reporting between 2,001 and 5,000 customers without power in New Milford according to its power outage map. New Milford residents reported outages near Gibbs Elementary School, Berkley Elementary School, St. Joe's, New Milford High School, Brookchester and Main Street. It is uncertain at this time when power will be restored. PSE&G had to cease any overnight repairs as wind gusts reached over 45mph. Crews will begin repair work around 8am Tuesday morning. At the storm's peak, between 6pm and 8pm Monday, emergency services and the DPW were …

Christie Slams Atlantic City Mayor For Telling People To Stay

Christie questions Langford's decision to tell residents to stay in direct conflict with Christie's orders.

Gov. Christie hammered Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford's advice that Atlantic City residents to stay where they were even after Christie emphasized the need to evacuate the city. "Mayor Langford told them to stay at shelters in the city and now they're stuck," Christie said during the a Monday night conference. "Despite my admonition, he gave them comfort to stay." Atlantic City residents who stayed behind were stuck in a shelter as Hurricane Sandy was making landfall Monday night. Earlier in the day, Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management officials called all first responders off the street for safety concerns. He went on to say there were some residents who were angry they were told to evacuate during Hurricane Irene, but …
