Locally owned businesses across the county are benefitting from Small Business Saturday
One day after the biggest shopping day of the holiday season, small businesses in Bergen County continued to see an uptick in sales as consumers continued to spend and support their local businesses as part of AMEX's Small Business Saturday. In Englewood, shop owners saw a slow start to the day as customers waited until late morning to start hitting the streets. At the same time, city employees were able to dedicate time to decorating lamppoles and utility work continued on Dean Street. "I think AMEX should be commended for honoring small businesses in the downtown districts," Marla Weinglast of Complements said. "We're seeing more customers want to support their local businesses because they know the owners and sales team on a personal …

Inspectors to spread out across Bergen County and authorities will have “zero tolerance” for fraudulent home repair companies and contractors, the Bergen County Executive said.
Officials will inspect contractors working on repairs in areas slammed by Superstorm Sandy as part of a new county police-led task force designed to protect homeowners from storm-related scams, the county executive announced Tuesday. “My administration will have zero tolerance for fraudulent home improvement companies or any contractor or company that seeks to take advantage of vulnerable people suffering from the terrible tragedy that hit our county,” Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan said in a statement. Led by County Police Capt. Victor F. Cuttitta Jr., the task force will include officials from the Consumer Affairs and Consumer Protections offices. Inspectors will fan out across Bergen County, with special attention given to …

FEMA approves Christie’s request to extend Disaster Unemployment Assistance to cover all New Jersey counties as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is now available for anyone living or working in the affected counties at the time of Hurricane Sandy, and who are unemployed as a direct result of the damages caused by the storm. In so many Bergen County towns, Sandy effectively closed businesses for days on end, displacing workers who only get paid if they work. It has yet to be calculated the amount of money lost among businesses who could not open their doors; especially small, independently-owned businesses. No business=no paying customers=no money to meet payroll. In New Milford, almost every business along River Road and Main Street was closed due to the power outages that lasted for more than a week. All of these businesses had no …

Governor says easing Sunday sales restriction will help with storm recovery.
Gov. Chris Christie has signed an executive order suspending Bergen County's Sunday sales restriction, known as Blue Laws. "During this time of recovery and rebuilding, our citizens must have adequate access to the supplies they need to help return their lives to normal – particularly those residents who are still without power,” Christie said in a statement Sunday. “To accomplish this, we are temporarily suspending Blue Laws in Bergen County so that local residents can purchase the essential goods and services they need to continue through recovery period and begin the rebuilding process.” Christie's decision came after Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan requested the Sunday shopping restrictions be suspended. In a conference call…

Fuel shortages could impact storm repair crews, official says. Consumers are mobbing service stations around Bergen County.
Bergen County officials are urging local governments to conserve fuel as concerns are mounting that a gasoline shortage could impact emergency services and utility repair crews responding to Sandy's devastation. "If we don't get fuel in a couple of days, obviously, emergency services stop and so do all the restoration people," Bergen County Emergency Management Coordinator Lt. Dwane Razzetti told officials in a Wednesday afternoon briefing. The county can transport limited amounts of fuel, but only for critical public safety uses, he added. Local officials can make requests through Bergen's emergency operations center. "Everybody is starting to run out of fuel," Razzetti said. The region's main ports, in Newark and Elizabeth, were not …
