The strength of a child defines the meaning of Thanksgiving
Editor's note: Some stories are worth re-telling. This is one of them. It's a story I share every Thanksgiving to remind myself of why we are gathered together--to remember all that we have, and never forget what so many others have lost. Her name does not matter; only her story does. She was three-years-old the day before Thanksgiving 2005 when my neighbor asked if I could care for her daughter at my house. She did not ask me to watch her daughter because there were last minute holiday errands to run, or appointments to be met. No, she asked me to care for her three-year-old daughter because her only son would die that day. He was 16-years old. He had cancer. “Joey has a weed growing inside of him that’s poison,” this little girl …

With the majority of town still without power, and most businesses closed, New Milford is trying to get back to normal.
Less than 48 hours since Sandy came barreling into Bergen County, taking down hundred-year old trees, wires, telephone and light poles, New Milford is trying to recover from the devastation. "Being without power for so long is the hardest thing to deal with," one resident of Graphic Street said. "Especially having no internet. I feel so disconnected from everything that's going on in the world." All of the businesses on Main Street remained closed Wednesday due to lack of power, as did CVS, Shop Rite, Dunkin' Donuts and both 7-Elevens. The DPW was out in full force and the majority of borough streets that were closed due to downed trees and debris Tuesday were cleared by Wednesday. PSE&G could be seen all throughout town working on …

Chief Papapietro assures residents that police are utilizing every resource to apprehend the suspect. Simulated child abduction coordinates county resources and prepares police for real events. Philosophically aligned on most of the hot-button issues, 'Candidates Night' saw little controversy and much agreement. Hekemian called Shop Rite's produce manager as a witness in Thursday's special hearing of the Zoning Board. The question the audience was asking is…

New Milford Shop Rite hosting Stem Cell Donor drive Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm to help save the life of a mother with three young children.
Shira Klein of Marlboro, mother of three young children, was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2010. The New Milford Shop Rite on River Road is holding a stem cell donor drive Saturday, October 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in hopes that somebody out there can be her cure. The drive, organized by New Milford resident Kate Jelaska, and sponsored by DKMS Americas (the largest bone marrow center in the world) is Klein's second attempt to beat Hodgkin's and she is desperately seeking donors. "I really can't stand the thought of Shira's three little kids losing their mother and I really want to help their family and my friend in any way that I can," Jelaska said. "I'm asking my community to help me try and find a match for Shira." For the last …

Do you know of someplace looking for summer help? Let us know.
With the end of the school year just around the corner, it's a good time for teens to start looking for their summer jobs. New Milford and the surrounding area offer many potential jobs for students seeking seasonal employment. There are several clubs with pools that may need life guards, such as the New Milford Swim Club, the Pascack Valley Swim Club and the Bergen County YJCC. There are also numerous camps in the area which may need counselors, like New Milford's recreation summer sports camp program and other private camps. Year-round businesses may also need some help during the summer months. Part-time students can help fill gaps left by regular employees who go away on vacation. New Milford has Burger King, Dairy Queen and Brain …

Shop Rite gets 51 percent of the votes in Patch's Readers' Choice poll.
The results of Patch’s Readers’ Choice poll are in, and the winner of “favorite grocery store in New Milford” is Shop Rite. Shop Rite garnered 51 percent of the vote and a total of 10 points (see rules attached). Even though Shop Rite earned the highest ratings, it also earned some of the harshest criticisms. Many readers commented on Shop Rite's poor maintenance conditions and narrow aisles. Others expressed concerns that Shop Rite is the commercial anchor of the United Water Company development, property that they feel should not be developed due to flooding. However, when Donna Colucci was organizing her Labor Day of Love for residents affected by Hurricane Irene, it was the manager of Shop Rite who said to her, "What do you need?" and…

Donna Colucci honored for orchestrating "Labor Day of Love" barbecue for those affected by Hurricane Irene
Hurricane Irene was no match for Donna Colucci and her team of volunteers, who orchestrated "Labor Day of Love," a town-wide barbecue that took place on Hughes Rd. just days after the flood. Colucci's efforts were recently recognized by Governor Chris Christie at a luncheon honoring people throughout the state who lent their time and talent to help those hit hardest by Hurricane Irene. "The morning after the storm, Dominic and I were walking around town and New Milford was still dry," Colucci said. But not for long. Colucci, along with her husband, Councilman Dominic Colucci, and many other concerned residents watched as the morning progressed and an "ever-rising current of water" came "fast and furious" down River Edge Rd. carrying in …
