Panel Bashes Idea of Armed Guards in Bergen County Schools

Mahwah hosted a County School Boards Association panel discussion Thursday night where law enforcement and school officials made security suggestions for local schools

Armed guards are definitely not the solution to school safety questions brought up after the Newtown school shooting, but there are other measures school districts in Bergen County could be taking to make schools safer. That was the message of a panel of local law enforcement and school officials who commented on school safety concerns to a group of about 150 school board representatives at a special Bergen County School Boards meeting at Mahwah High School Thursday night. “In Mahwah, we are very opposed to having armed guards in schools,” Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli, a member of the panel - which also included the chiefs of the Hackensack, Hillsdale and Dumont departments, the Superintendent of the Dumont School District, and the …

High-Capacity Ammo Magazines Should Be Banned, Senator Says

U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg will ask Congress to approve a ban on ammunition magazines of more than 10 rounds. Do you agree with his proposed bill?

In the wake of the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced plans to reintroduce high-capacity magazine ban legislation in the 113th Congress. Lautenberg’s bill, the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, would prohibit the manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. Just understand that in Iraq during the 1980's, 1990's and currently, just about everybody had a weapon, including AK47's, and there were 26 Gun Shops open and doing a brisk business in Baghdad. All of these weapons did not prevent an oppressive government under Sadam Houssain, or prevent a …   more ›

Newtown Massacre Prompts Gun Control Rally in Teaneck

Dozens gathered at a Cedar Lane rally to call for stricter gun laws and an end to violence following elementary school shooting in Connecticut.

Residents rallied Saturday night in Teaneck to call for stricter gun control laws in the wake of a shooting rampage that left 20 children and six adults dead at a Connecticut elementary school.  The crowd, organized quickly through the Internet and by the Ethical Culture Society, held candles and carried signs calling for tighter regulation of firearms and an end to gun violence. Teaneck resident Jim Norman said he hoped to continue holding rallies and push elected leaders to act.  "We feel it is time to move from mourning to action," he said. "This is the first in this area of what we hope will be non-stop action until America comes to its senses."  Norman, a parent who said he was brought to tears by the killings, called for restrictions…
