Bergen County officials will offer up to $300 for firearms during the buyback event
Residents wishing to sell their personal firearms will be able to do so on Sunday afternoon at Saint Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church as part of the Bergen County Sheriff's gun buyback program. Officers will be at the church from 1 to 5pm. Funded through the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office by seized assets from criminal cases, the program will pay up to $300 for firearms. “Gun violence knows no bounds,” Sheriff Michael Saudino said in a statement. “Intentional violence and accidental discharges involving firearms can destroy families and communities. If we can take just one dangerous weapon out of our homes or off our streets, we can make Bergen County a safer place for all residents.” Firearms experts from the sheriff's office …

A New Milford man suffered serious head injuries after he crashed his motorcycle on Grunauer Place in Fair Lawn Tuesday night, police said
A New Milford man suffered serious head injuries after he was thrown from the motorcycle he was driving Tuesday night in Fair Lawn, police said. Saran Holmes, 40, crashed a relative's motorcycle on Grunauer Place near Ward Street while out for a test drive around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Police found Holmes in the street with the 2007 Yamaha dumped nearby and he was rushed to the hospital with head injuries, according to a NorthJersey.com report. Sgt. Lonnie Mergler said he wasn't sure of the extent of Holmes' injuries but that they must have been serious because the Bergen County traffic accident investigator was on scene. Holmes, who was not wearing a helmet and did not have a motorcycle endorsement for his license, was issued …
Further states that by the governing bodies lack of action, the application meets all criteria for approval
After years of the borough providing documentation showing that the United Water property would be best utilized for affordable housing units, the project planner for the proposed development of the 13-acre United Water property has stated that by New Milford's inaction, the mixed-use project is inherently beneficial to the town. Peter Steck concluded his testimony during Tuesday evening's Zoning Board of Adjustment meeting where he placed the onus of the Mayor and Council's decision to not rezone the property the impetus for the need of a D variance. "The governing body could have zoned this site to hold all of the [affordable housing] units, but they did not do that," Steck testified. "We deserve merit approval of this application …

Joseph Binetti is the latest Zoning Board member to be recused from the United Water hearings over a perceived conflict
The New Milford Zoning Board of Adjustment will now have the bare minimum of five sitting members for a quorum as Joseph Binetti recused himself from the remaining United Water hearings on Tuesday night. Binetti is now the third member to be recused from the United Water hearings following Board Chairman Karl Schaffenberger's decision in February 2012 and then Vice-Chairman Ronald Stokes' recusal in late March 2013. "It is not my choice to recuse myself, having been a part of the application from the beginning," Binetti said. "I thought I have served both sides well listening during these many, many months. If an application comes in front of me that may effect my livlehood, I will do the best of my ability to sit here and repesent the …

Students took third place in the competition featuring New Jersey and Pennsylvania schools
Future New Milford filmmakers were awarded third place in the Montclair State University's "French Day" student film competition last month by beating out fellow New Jersey and Pennsylvania students. The eighth grade David E. Owens Middle School class under the supervision of French language teacher Issam Helwani won with their entry “The Québec Café Catastrophe." The third-place video was an original creation set in Quebec where the student actors had to resolve a problem while only speaking French. The film competition sought to educate students about the global status of the French language by drawing attention to the places and situations in which one can speak French in the world today. “It is remarkable to see so many students …
