While I understand that the rankings are only ONE of the many ways to measure the educational standards of the school, we have to focus on improving on improving our rankings. And often times, it is understanding how the rankings are calculated and improving on those specific parameters. Perfect or not; if NJASK test scores are used to rank schools, it is imperative that Gibbs school (and all NM …   more ›

School Board Approves $146 Taxpayer Increase for 2013-14 Budget

Under the new average assessment, New Milford homeowners will see an increase in their taxes as part of the 2013-14 school year $32.2 million budget

Still recovering from drastic state aid cuts and a defeated budget a few years ago, the New Milford Board of Education approved its $32.3 million spending plan for the 2013-14 school year on Wednesday night. The budget and its $28.5 million tax levy will increase the average homeowner's tax bill by $146 for the year. Following the borough's latest reassessment, the new average assessment in New Milford is $321,339. "That's pretty much in line with last year," Business Administrator Michael Sawicz said."It equals out to a $36.62 increase per quarter." For the 2013-14 school year, New Milford again received $1,728,705 in state aid, however Sawicz stated that the district must return $61,000 to Trenton for the Schools Development Authority's…

@Tomasina I am sorry for the experience you feel you have in Oradell/RiverEdge. This article is about the New Milford budget and we are not choosing technology over teachers. There is also no conspiracy to hide things from the public. The fact is that everyone has busy lives and no matter how much information you put out there it will only be enough when people can take the time to go through it …   more ›

School State Aid Flat in New Milford

Bergen districts set to receive nearly $3 million more in funding over last year, Christie Administration says.

State aid to New Milford's public school district will stay flat, according to Department of Education figures released Thursday.  New Milford is set to receive $1,728,705, the same amount in funding it received last year.  Bergen County districts would get nearly $3 million more in state funding than last year, officials announced. Governor Christie's proposed 2014 budget includes almost $9 billion in school aid. “Throughout my time in office I have continuously argued that in order to grow New Jersey’s economy we must invest in education, and my proposed budget is a reflection of my commitment to our educational system and communities in Bergen County and across the state," Christie said in a statement.   Follow New Milford Patch on …

Pending Legislation Would Release Schools from 2 Percent Cap for School Security

In the wake of the Newtown massacre, schools coping with upgrading security without going over the 2 percent cap may get relief from pending legislation.

In the wake of Newtown, schools everywhere are performing security audits and collaborating with local law enforcement to implement new security intitiatives. New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro and Superintendent Michael Polizzi confirmed that together they have been reviewing security in each of New Milford's schools and exploring new technology in an effort to implement new systems, but they are not yet ready to openly discuss what they are looking into. "Some initiatives we will be able to talk about, and some we won't," Papapietro said, stressing that to reveal new school security measures is to open the playbook for someone intent on causing harm. "Central to all of this, we have to balance the need to secure each building with…

This is a great model for all public schools. I was able to confer with my students counselor and refer my student to a counselor at any time! We need these changes, not an increase in security and police. Charter schools are a threat to community schools like this model, which means we are going in the wrong direction. I think if we focus the discussion on kids, not guns, we will solve more …   more ›

I agree 100% we are extremely lucky to have such a proactive police force in our small community, and I also agree that a permanent "Police" presence is probably not the right answer. I'm just wondering what lessons we can take away from this tragedy to further protect our children.   more ›

Considering how Chief Papapietro is concerned about ALL of the residents of NM I am sure he has approached SJS. It would be up to Principal Vail to accept or not accept or possibly reach out to Oradell since that is the town that is usually asked to attend any important SJS functions.   more ›
