The event is part of the DEA’s national “Take-Back Initiative,” which the agency says has netted tons of potentially dangers prescription drugs since it started.
The New Milford Police Department partnered with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Saturday, offering residents another chance “to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.” According to Chief Frank Papapietro, Operation Take-Back was very successful. "We took in two very large garbage bags of unused, unwanted or expired prescription medication during the operation," he said. "We also collected unused pet medication as well." Eric Kanefsky, Acting Director with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, has been visiting high schools throughout the state emphasizing the dangers of taking prescription drugs without a …

No commitment has been made, but Mayor and Council and Chief of Police considering consolidating its dispatch services with the county's state-of-the-art communications center in Mahwah.
Since the $12 million state-of-the-art Bergen County Public Safety Operations Center opened in Mahwah in 2010, 21 local police departments in Bergen County have consolidated their dispatch services with those of the county. New Milford is considering joining them. Police Chief Frank Papapietro and the Mayor and Council are exploring the cost savings of transferring the police department's 9-1-1 police emergency system to the county's central dispatch in Mahwah. (The New Milford Fire Department and EMS dispatch have already consolidated with Northwest Bergen Central Dispatch in Ridgewood.) However, Papapietro was adamant that he would only agree to this transfer as long as the police desk continues to provide the residents of New Milford …

Ramsey, Saddle River and Upper Saddle River police capture suspected New Milford burglars.
Chief of Police Frank Papapietro reported the arrest of two men from Ramsey in connection with a burglary on Faller Drive Monday morning. Charles Davis, 22, was charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief. Ian Skelley, 25, was charged with possession of CDS, under 25 grams, and possession of drug paraphernalia, Papapietro said. In addition to those charges, Skelley also received a motor vehicle summons from the Saddle River police department. According to Papapietro, New Milford police responded to a report of a burglary Monday morning after a witness observed a man breaking into a Faller Drive apartment. Papapietro said the witness also observed the suspect being dropped off in front of the apartment prior to his forcibly entering …

The infrastructure being "taxed," Chief Papapietro appeals to Mayor and Council for building expansion to accommodate current needs of the department and conform to code.
Chief of Police Frank Papapietro came before the Mayor and Council Monday evening to address the current needs of the New Milford Police Department Headquarters. "The current infrastructure is so taxed that it compromises the safety of our officers," Papapietro said. Since the department was transferred from its Center Street location within the original Company No. 1 Firehouse in 1959, the footprint of the department's headquarters has not changed. "We're an entirely different department than the one this space was originally designed for," Papapietro said. According to Papapietro, the current location of police headquarters was designed to accomodate 15 officers in 1959. "We are at a current roster of 32, with a State recommendation that…

A 1972 house fire on Rhein Court took the life of 26-year old patrolman Ray Woods and 45-year old Marie Cordey; firefighter Joe Costello sustained critical injuries.
Despite the span of years, and the different roles each man played that fateful morning 40 years ago, Fire Inspector Alan Silverman, Chief of Police Frank Papapietro and firefighter George Saigh recount the events of what took place with the same startling accuracy. The lines on the faces of these three men, deepening as they recall that night 40 years ago, tell the story of the gravity of what they witnessed while fighting a fatal house fire on Rhein Court that took the lives of a 26-year old police officer and a 45-year old mother, and left a veteran firefighter with critical life-altering injuries. In the early hours of a November morning in 1972, those expected to live, died; those expected to die, lived. It was a fire unlike any other…

In the first step towards rebuilding the ranks depleted by retirements and departures, two new police officers take oath of office during Monday's Mayor and Council Meeting.
Two new police officers were sworn in during Monday's Mayor and Council Meeting in the department's first step towards replenishing the ranks depleted by retirements and departures over the course of the past five years. Officers Bryan Mone and Michael Lafrano were sworn into the New Milford Police Department Monday by Mayor Ann Subrizi. Police Chief Frank Papapietro said that Mone graduated from the Bergen County Police Academy under the Alternate Route program in December, 2008, and has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Manhattan College. He was initially hired by New Jersey Transit Police in March 2011 where he was employed until accepting the position in New Milford. Prior to that he worked as a dispatcher for the Closter Police …

Police report that someone entered the house while residents were out for the day.
The New Milford Police Department is investigating a daytime burglary that occurred on Labor Day. The burglary took place sometime between 12:15pm and 9pm in a residence on James Woods Court where entry was gained through a first floor bathroom window, Chief Frank Papapietro said. A safe and a jewelry box were taken from a second floor bedroom, he said. Lt. Stephen Littlefield and officers Nelson Perez and Frank Haggerty arrived on the scene and discovered that the first floor bathroom window was open, Papapietro said. New Milford Detectives and the Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation unit were dispatched to take evidence. This is the second burglary in the matter of days. Junior Police Academy is New Milford Police Department's most sought after community-based program.
This June, 80 young recruits received certificates of completion from the New Milford Police Department marking the conclusion of the week-long Junior Police Academy. These graduates ended their week with more than just a certificate. They walked away with new knowledge and appreciation of what law enforcement is really like. In addition to physical fitness activities, the academy is centered around building a positive relationship between the New Milford Police Department and the youth of the community. The program is run by Police Officer Keith Wester, who also serves as the School Resource Officer at David E. Owens Middle School. He and the other police officers who assist him encourage the students to take pride in themselves, teach …

Chief James Rittgers (Ret.) leaves behind a standing legacy in the New Milford Police Department.
During his tenure as New Milford's Chief of Police from 1988 to 1991, Chief James Rittgers would carefully analyze all aspects of a situation before reaching a measured conclusion while holding his signature pipe in hand. "He was never heavy handed with discipline nor demeaning toward his officers," remembers Police Chief Frank Papapietro. According to Papapietro, when discipline was called for, Rittgers was firm, but fair. "He always made his point with an even-toned fatherly 'advice session' which always left the offending officer remorseful, but respecting the Chief’s viewpoint," he said. Born in Oklahoma City, Rittgers came to New Milford where, after serving in the army during the Korean War, he joined the New Milford Police …
