Board of Ed To Fill Drake's Seat With Appointment

Dan Conner assumes role of Board President, Paige Ryan, Vice President.

With the resignation of Board of Education President Darren Drake, Superintendent Michael Polizzi said that the Board will appoint a person to fill his seat. "The Board accepted the resignation of Darren Drake with regret," Polizzi told Patch.  Drake is stepping down due to the fact that his company is relocating and he will be moving with them.  Drake told Patch, "After giving it much thought, I decided to resign because the district deserves 100 percent of my attention, and I expect no less of myself," Drake said. "Given the requirements of my job, I cannot possibly devote the same amount of attention to my duties on the Board. Therefore, I feel that the right decision is to step down." Polizzi said that the Board is aware of a number of…

Hekemian Rescinds Field Donation to Board of Education

Hekemian's engineers determine BOE property is not suitable for a storm water storage basin, causing developer to rescind offer.

The developer of the United Water property has rescinded its donation of three acres to the Board of Education for a field, the New Milford Schools Superintendent told a crowd that gathered in the New Milford High School auditorium Monday night. According to Michael Polizzi, Hekemian's engineers performed a geological test on the portion of the BOE's property on which they intended to build the storm water retention basin and discovered that the water table was too high. For that reason, the donation of the land was rescinded, he said.  "We regret the developer's decision as it stands today," Polizzi said.  Hekemian entered into a "conceptual contract" with the New Milford BOE to donate more than three acres of property to construct a …

I live across the street and currently have no flooding issues whatsoever. I have proof of this. If this development changes flood patterns and causes issues to my home, rest assured I'll be one of many homeowners seeking legal recourse - all from my own town who I pay taxes to for protection from such issues? If you ask me, the players in this game are clearly underestimating the intelligence of…   more ›

New Milford High School Makes Newsweek's Ranking of Top High Schools

Ranking places New Milford High School in the top 3.8 percent of all high schools in the country and thirteenth in Bergen County.

New Milford High School has made it to Newsweek's ranking of top high schools in the country. Although its ranking of 1028 may seem modest, with more than 26,407 high schools nationwide, this puts New Milford in the top 3.8 percent in the country. New Milford is ranked 13 out of all of the high schools ranked in Bergen County. Danielle Shanley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, said that the ranking supports the long-term vision that the administration has been focused on for the past three years--a vision that includes making foundational changes that will better connect students to advanced learning and prepare them for college and beyond. Shanley not only credits the ranking with the district's commitment to increasing the number …

Catch up on all of last week's news in New Milford,

Polizzi Talks About His Letter to the Zoning Board, BOE's Position on Development

Superintendent Polizzi talks to Patch about his appearance before the Zoning Board, the letter he submitted to the Board, and the BOE's position on the development of the United Water property.

Superintendent Michael Polizzi wants to make one thing very clear. The Board of Education has been involved in the potential development of the United Water property before the plans were even filed. "What we have not been involved with to date, is attending the Zoning Board meetings regarding the development," he said. According to Polizzi, he and the Board of Education (BOE) do not believe that the property should be left completely undeveloped. Although they adamantly oppose any residential building, Polizzi said, "A certain degree of development would be good for the community, and what's good for the community is good for the schools." Polizzi said that the intent of his letter, that was supported by the BOE, was to make the Zoning …

We the taxpayers of New Milford voted down the Field of Dreams because of the tax burden placed on the citizens. The question here is why the Board of Education went into negotiations with Hekemian. Did any part of the Mayor and Council also participate in these backdoor talks? How did Hekemian come up with placing the Water Detention Basin on the Softball Field? This property belongs to the …   more ›

Polizzi Letter to Zoning Board Raises Another Potential Conflict Question

School Superintendent Polizzi's letter to the Zoning Board regarding the proposed development of the United Water property raises objections and questions of potential conflict.

New Milford School Superintendent Michael Polizzi submitted a letter dated March 11, 2013, to the Zoning Board of Adjustment regarding the proposed development of the United Water property, according to Board attorney Scott Sproviero. That letter -- undisclosed to the public, but said by Sproviero to include four areas of concern --was the subject of much discussion between Sproviero and Hekemian's attorney, Andy DelVecchio. At issue is whether or not Polizzi has authorization to speak on behalf of the Board of Education since, according to DelVecchio, there are currently no public minutes available on the BOE's website reflecting their consent to have Polizzi appear. Polizzi assured the Board that the BOE did consent to his appearance and…

Talking about safety Why doesn't the police Dept enforce the no drop off in front of the school on River road. The kids cut in between the cars while the traffic is stopped due to the dropping off. There should be no right hand turn onto Cooper st. durring 830am-900am and 250pm-330pm And the town should enforce their own rules. This lack of enforcement is a safety hazard and creates additional …   more ›

Pending Legislation Would Release Schools from 2 Percent Cap for School Security

In the wake of the Newtown massacre, schools coping with upgrading security without going over the 2 percent cap may get relief from pending legislation.

In the wake of Newtown, schools everywhere are performing security audits and collaborating with local law enforcement to implement new security intitiatives. New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro and Superintendent Michael Polizzi confirmed that together they have been reviewing security in each of New Milford's schools and exploring new technology in an effort to implement new systems, but they are not yet ready to openly discuss what they are looking into. "Some initiatives we will be able to talk about, and some we won't," Papapietro said, stressing that to reveal new school security measures is to open the playbook for someone intent on causing harm. "Central to all of this, we have to balance the need to secure each building with…

This is a great model for all public schools. I was able to confer with my students counselor and refer my student to a counselor at any time! We need these changes, not an increase in security and police. Charter schools are a threat to community schools like this model, which means we are going in the wrong direction. I think if we focus the discussion on kids, not guns, we will solve more …   more ›

Post Newtown, New Milford Schools Stress Safety and Preparedness

Since the tragedy of Newtown, Connecticut, the question on the minds of every parent is, "How safe are our schools?"

The safety and security of New Milford's students, teachers and personnel was foremost on the minds of Chief of Police Frank Papapietro and Superintendent Michael Polizzi Monday morning. Since the shootings occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, there has been an increased police presence at all of the New Milford public schools. Also, Papapietro spent Monday morning visiting each school and meeting with the principals. Understanding that the question on the mind of every parent is, "How safe are our schools?" Papapietro and Polizzi stress that safety is ensured by preparedness through routine crisis response training drills, effective emergency response plans, and fluid communication between the schools and the police department. Both …

I agree 100% we are extremely lucky to have such a proactive police force in our small community, and I also agree that a permanent "Police" presence is probably not the right answer. I'm just wondering what lessons we can take away from this tragedy to further protect our children.   more ›

Education With A Purpose: A Master Plan For New Milford Public Schools

With the costs associated with the plan high, Polizzi urges BOE to stay apprised of any developments and opportunities that may arise in connection with the United Water property that is adjacent to NMHS.

One thing that Superintendent Michael Polizzi will not stand for is status quo. Since taking the helm three years ago, Polizzi examined every nook and cranny of the district and, with support and input from the Board of Education and his Central Administrative Team, began to prepare and implement a master plan for New Milford Public Schools that would serve "as a blueprint for the short-and long-term vision" for the district. The skeletal components of the master plan include refining existing educational programs, ensuring adequate instructional staffing to reduce class size, enhancing campus security, maintaining and repairing facilities and grounds, and developing a long-range technology plan. At the heart of the plan is this central …

My article was a brief overview of the master plan and did not include every point contained. However, within the master plan "grounds" is included under major capital projects. At the time of the drafting and approval of the master plan, the "field of dreams" had not yet gone to referendum. When I sat down with Supt. Polizzi improvement of the schools grounds, including the football field, were …   more ›
