Former Council President and current member of SOD reminds New Milford that the fight against development is for the kids.

FOR THE KIDS! The rallying cry "FOR THE KIDS" has motivated New Milford residents to seemingly do the impossible and make it routine. Thirty years ago, when we moved into town, I was so impressed with the sense of community that I felt here in New Milford, it was palpable. You felt it everywhere--a feeling of place, a feeling of being part of something much bigger than just yourself. When my children started to participate in Little League, soft ball, Junior Football, cheerleading, it was bigger than life. Men and woman volunteers, from all backgrounds, all ages, some home grown, others from different times and places, all coming together for the kids. Just take a moment and think about what it takes to organize all the activities, …

Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the wonderful New Milford residents who have contacted me to tell me to keep up the fight to save open space and quality of life in New Milford. There are times when you start to feel burned out, but then some one stops you to tell your that they appreciate your efforts. They tell you they feel the same way. You don't know how important it is to hear that you support my position to fight United Water, Hekemian and Inserra to preserve New Milford's last undeveloped parcel of land. Some of you have asked what you can do to help. The first thing I would ask is that you, too, join the effort by writing or calling United Water and Inserra to tell them that you do not support this …

In light of the shooting in Connecticut, one resident questions leaders on the senseless killing of young school children.

Dear leaders of this country, Where is the outrage? Children were killed just for sitting in a classroom. Why do I only see calm relaxed condolences from you?It is like this is an everyday event that we will get over, move on and forget about until the next time. This is not acceptable to me and I want something to be done about it. And the solution should not be constrained by funding or people's rights. Human life is priceless and that of our children more than priceless. What kind of adults are we if we cannot protect our children? What kind of country have we created when children do not feel safe in their town and their classroom? What are you going to do about it? I want an answer now. Barbara Monahan New Milford

SOD Communication Chair responds to Hackensack Riverkeeper
- OPINION

Wednesday, November 28, 2012
Captain Bill has done a major disservice not only to the residents of New Milford, but to all who have respected his position as Riverkeeper. The misinformation concerning the United Water property in New Milford is simply mind boggling. First, the one and only application ever submitted to the Borough of New Milford is the one currently being reviewed by the Zoning Board. This is the monstrosity that Captain Bill concedes is "an inflated development plan." His assertion that this was not the first plan submitted is absolutely inaccurate. Hekemian Developers made a presentation in April 2011 describing the "smaller" plan. That plan was NEVER formally submitted. The current plan was introduced early in 2012. SOD was formed AFTER this …

Candidates for the Board of Education will appear on the same ballot as elected officials this Nov. 6.

Editor: This is a unique election year in New Jersey. For the first time, Board of Education candidates appear on the same ballot as the rest of our elected representatives. Especially with this being a presidential election year, many of us may forget to cast our votes for our local Board of Education candidates. I am writing to remind all registered voters to exercise your right to vote on this Election Day and, if you live in New Milford, to vote for Darren Drake and Joe Steele for the New Milford Board of Education. I served my community for 19 years on the board and I was fortunate enough to serve with both Darren and Joe for a few of those years. This is a time when experience really does matter. Overall, the NMBOE is an …

For those who were unable to attend 'Candidates Night,' Council candidate Peter Rebsch wants residents to get to know him better.

This past Wednesday, October 17th, SOD (StopOverDevelopment) hosted a “Candidate’s Night,” at the DEO Middle School. Candidates running for New Milford’s Town Council were given the opportunity in a public forum to answer questions from residents and SOD members. I am grateful for having been given this opportunity. I want to thank SOD! It was a great idea and a big success. It gave the residents a chance to get to know us better. I also want to thank the residents who attended and asked great questions. And finally I want to thank my fellow candidates. New Milford is lucky to have such a great group to choose from. Below is the letter I put together for the evening, and read to the audience. I offer it to those who were in attendance as a…

SOD Executive Director, Miriam Pickett, asks citizens to unite against rezoning the United Water property.
- OPINION

Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Last night over 100 New Milford residents of all ages from all neighborhoods came together to ask the New Milford Mayor, Ann Subrizi, and Council members, Randi Duffie, Hedy Grant, Dominic Colucci and Diego Robalino (Council President Berner and Councilman Ashley have recused themselves) to wait for the application process for the purchase of the United Water Company property to run its course through the Zoning Board of Adjustment. All of us present at the march and demonstration believe that by rezoning the property now we will be handing it over to the highest bidder and New Milford will be the loser. Currently zoned for single family housing, the property is not available for mixed use development. Once rezoning occurs all efforts to …

The proposed development of United Water property will increase traffic in the school zones.
- OPINION

Friday, August 3, 2012
To The Editor: I recently read that the mayor of Cresskill and other local officials were prompted to study traffic patterns near the Edward H Bryan School due to an increase in traffic and accidents (one in which a crossing guard was badly injured). It must be nice to live in a town where the leadership is looking out for the welfare of its residents. That is not the case in New Milford. The consideration to rezone the property owned by United Water to accommodate a large supermarket and a 221-unit housing complex next to the high school will surely put our students at risk! The supermarket will draw a tremendous amount of traffic on to the school zone, and the students of St. Joseph's will also be at risk, as shoppers will surely use Elm…

To The Editor: New Milford's mayor stated "the only way to stop overdevelopment is to stop people from coming here. "This is not a statement I want to hear from a leader of the town I live in. It sounds like she has given up. It sounds like a cop out to me. It sounds weak and not inspiring. It sounds like she has no fight left. (Oradell beat Walgreens. I want Mayor Murray as our leader!) I want a leader who is willing to take the responsibility for land management. A leader who knows what is right and wants to protect the well being of all citizens. I want a leader who holds the vision of all the citizens not just the few or her own. I want a leader who is forward thinking in protecting the size of our town and the development of its …

Proposed United Water development in New Milford has no benefits for River Edge and Oradell residents
- OPINION
-
Thursday, July 26, 2012
To The Editor: Oradell and River Edge residents have reason to be concerned about the proposed enormous Hekemian development at the intersection of New Milford Avenue and River Road near the Oradell border. For example, covering the sixteen acre property with 200 housing units, a 70,000 sq. ft supermarket, large parking garage and a bank will reduce the amount of water that would otherwise be absorbed by the land. River Edge and Oradell will suffer the consequences flood waters destructive of property and increased municipal costs to cope with the flooding. In addition, the cost of maintaining the paved streets near the development is likely to be increased because higher volume and heavier vehicles require higher quality (probably more …

Ulises, save your breath, it is not worth the effort. Adam claims to be an attorney that lives near the river and whose house was flooded previously. He is for the lowering of the reservoirs as a storm approaches (potentially hurting the majority of people if the rain does not come), but in favor of this development next to the river that floods his and his neighbor’s homes? He calls the united …   more ›
