Mayor Subrizi lends her voice to the conversation provoked by the Riverkeeper's position on the development of the United Water Property.
Regarding the development of the United Water property, the question that no one seems to be asking is "What's best for New Milford and its residents?" As Mayor, that is the question I am charged to consider in this situation, and all matters, that affect our town. The Riverkeeper has offered an opinion on the fate of the United Water property that SOD disagrees with. No issue is without opposing opinions and SOD's response demonstrates that there is no room in the conversation for any voice other than their own. Since the property entered into a private sale contract with Hekemian, I have fielded many opinions from residents, many of whom tell me they want a Shop Rite and a field on that property, as long as there are no apartments that …
Disappointed that the Hackensack Riverkeeper supports development on the United Water property, SOD speaks out.
The Executive Board of Stop Overdevelopment has been aware of the Riverkeeper's (Bill Sheehan) support for the proposed development of the United Water property in New Milford. We were very disappointed that before getting the full story of SOD's opposition to the project, he went public by publishing an editorial in his seasonal newsletter supporting converting what is now open space into a highly developed mixed use complex. After reading the editorial in which our position was completely misrepresented, we tried to arrange a meeting through a third party who has long and positive dealings with him to discuss what we believe are glaring misstatements and a complete misunderstanding of the situation in New Milford. Instead of answering …

Citing land as "post-industrial," Hackensack Riverkeeper says United Water property is not considered a critical habitat and sides with Subrizi in favoring Hekemian's original plan for development.
Hackensack Riverkeeper, Bill Sheehan, told Patch that while it would have been "wonderful" if New Milford had been able to acquire the United Water property for open space preservation, the land itself is "post-industrial" and, as a whole, offers no environmental protection against flooding, as SOD (Stop Over Development) contends. "While I agree that 221 residential units plus a shopping center is a helluva lot to shoehorn into 13 acres, if the redevelopment plan comports with stormwater and flood-protection regulations, there is no good reason for our organization to oppose it," Sheehan said. Although the United Water property exists within the watershed property of the Hackensack River, Sheehan upholds, "The property was used for many …

The Demarest Republican once again beat out Westwood's John Birkner for this year's bragging rights
For the second year in a row, Demarest Republican Mayor Ray Cywinski claimed the Reservoir Challenge Mayor's Cup as he beat out Westwood's John Birkner by a boat length. In the fourth year of the annual event, Birkner claimed the title the first two years but has been narrowly beaten since then. Oradell Council President James Koth claimed third place while River Edge Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo and New Milford Mayor Ann Subrizi competed for the first time. The Mayor’s Cup was one of three races Saturday at the Oradell Reservoir, which is normally off-limits to kayakers and canoes. Once a year though, water enthusiasts are allowed on the water during the fundraising event for the Hackensack Riverkeeper. Approximately 200 people took to the …
