A pilot program at New Milford High School has been gaining attention as the senior students use of OpenCourseWare was recently highlighted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The IOCS (Independent Open CourseWare Study) program works as a complement to the schools Academy programs. New Milford High School senior Academy students take college courses as part of their independent study through OpenCourseWare.
The best way to describe New Milford High School's Academy is to quote from the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho: "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." In the case of these students, the administration and educators are working hard to expose as much of the universe as possible to them to help them achieve an understanding of the life that awaits them after graduation. For Academy seniors, what awaits them after graduation is college. And Principal Eric Sheninger was looking for a way to give them a real taste of the academic rigors of college when from a Twitter follower he discovered OpenCourseWare. OpenCourseWare, originally initiated by MIT and the Hewlett Foundation, is a free and …

Take a look at the week that was in New Milford.
In what appeared to be an 11th hour move, newly re-elected Democratic Councilman Austin Ashley pulled an upset when he made a motion to nominate Marc Leibman, the attorney representing him before the Zoning Board in the United Water property development, for Borough Attorney. At the start of Tuesday's Zoning Board meeting, board member Peter Rebsch requested that he be reseated so that he can participate in the hearing of the potential development of the United Water property by the S. Hekemian Group. The Zoning Board formally denied a motion made by Marc Leibman, the attorney who had represented Councilman Austin Ashley against the development of the United Water property, that the revisions made to the site plan constitutes the need for …

New Milford ranked 8th by Education Week in 13 high schools worth visiting.
Education Week has ranked New Milford High School eighth in its list of the top 13 high schools worth visiting. This ranking was attributed to New Milford High School Principal Eric Sheninger and his embrace of Professional Learning Networks (PLN) to raise the bar of education. But what makes these 13 high schools extraordinary? According to Education Week, they challenge old assumptions associated with education and strive to do things differently and in the process, bring about true educational reform by …
