During this week's Board of Education meeting, four teachers were honored as Teacher of the Year
The Greek philospher Socrates once said that "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel," and New Milford schools are gifted with some of the brightest flames as the district honored its four Teachers of the Year and District Teacher of the Year this week. This year's honores are Nora Aivers (NMHS), Stacey Calise (Gibbs), Pamela Krause (DEOMS) and Dora Oliviero (Berkley). Oliviero was also named District Teacher of the Year. "Every year at this time we have the priviledge to publically announce and recognize four individuals, four teachers that have dedicated years to not only their profession of teaching but the children of New Milford," Superintendent Michael Polizzi said. Aivers, who teaches mathematics and AP …

DEOMS PTO brings the fun of a Tricky Tray to the comforts of your home. Tickets go on sale Thursday, Feb. 7 and the drawing is taking place Tuesday, March 12.
Coming up with a fundraiser that will draw a lot of attention, as well as donations, is the initiative of every PTO. This year, the PTO of David E. Owens Middle School just may have found the hook. In lieu of doing an expensive night out, having to pay for babysitters, or asking people to come out on a cold winter's night, the DEOMS PTO has decided to deliver the tricky tray concept directly to the comfort of your own home. According to Tina Youngs, the PTO has received all kinds of amazing prizes to be raffled off. How does this fundraiser work? For parents of middle schoolers, the DEOMS PTO will be sending out raffle tickets in each student's report card. There will be a student raffle and an adult raffle. Let's remember--this is a …

The video, filmed at David E. Owens Middle School, depicts two armed shooters breaking into a local school, and aims to teach school officials and emergency workers how to respond, report says
A new 20-minute video that depicts how police agencies, fire departments, emergency responders and school personnel should react to “active shooter” situations in schools is now available to districts across Bergen County, NJ.com reported Tuesday. “Lockdown,” which was produced by the County Prosecutor’s Office and filmed at David E. Owens Middle School over a year ago, simulates a two armed attackers breaking into the school with rifles and a homemade bomb, the report says. According to NJ.com, the video shows how two teachers react to the situation differently, and points out which reaction is better, and why. "There have been so many [school shootings], and no two are ever identical," said Bergen County Police Sgt. John LaDuca explained…

The Field Of Dreams question goes to referendum today, giving residents the chance to finally give their opinion some weight at the polls.
After nearly a year of discussion and debate, voters will have the final say Tuesday on the proposed multi-use athletic field--dubbed the "Field of Dreams"-- which could cost up to $3 million to build at David E. Owens Middle School. This multi-purpose turf field would include a soccer, football and baseball field, in addition to two softball fields, and be a shared service between the borough and the New Milford Board of Education. Approval of this non-binding referendum will give elected officials a better understanding for how the voters feel about the installation of a turf field at the David E. Owens Middle School. If the field is approved, the borough will incur an additional $3 million in debt which is estimated to increase property…

Let’s shift to the turf field proposal for the David E. Owens Middle School. It is hardly the Field of Dreams. It is an alternative to the United Water Company property concept. The DEO field represents the best in the local partnership between the Borough and Board of Education given the availability of the acreage owned by the BOE. The Board of Education has been very public in its support of the proposal. On April 16, 2012, it approved a resolution “to enter into a shared services agreement with the Borough of New Milford in regard to planning and development of a turf field complex to be located at David E. Owens Middle School.” As far as the BOE is concerned, it is an equal partnership established around mixed use of the field by …

New Milford Students return from their week of summer service in New Orleans.
Students from David E. Owens Middle School and New Milford High School recently returned from their "Rebuilding New Orleans" trip. The trip was the brainchild of first year social studies teacher at David E. Owens Middle School, Ray Cottiers, (NMHS 2004) who wanted to inspire his students by providing them with an opportunity that would positively and permanently influence their lives. An experience similar in scope to Colleen Tambuscio's annual Holocaust trip. Cottiers decided on a trip to rebuild New Orleans where the students could experience the larger world outside of New Milford and help people in need in their own country. He connected with Operation Nehemiah, a nonprofit group committed to helping families rebuild after the …

Justin Bartus, eighth grader at David E. Owens Middle School, recognized by Board of Education for placing third in northern New Jersey region for his successful participation in the Stock Market Game.
Justin Bartus, an eighth grader at David E. Owens Middle School, was recently recognized at a Board of Education meeting for his successful participation in the Stock Market Game. For ten week this spring, students in Mrs. Diana Daley's Business Plan class participated in the Stock Market Game, an on-line program offered by SIFMA (Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association). The Stock Market Game gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an on-line portfolio. Although students feel as if they are playing a game, it is designed to teach them economic and financial concepts by having them actively engaged in the buying and selling of stocks. Students researched stocks using Yahoo finance and NYSE websites. …

David E. Owens Middle School students present plans for what they would develop on the 13-acre United Water property.
Since Hekemian filed plans for a mixed use development that includes a 70,500 sq. ft. supermarket, a 4300 sq. ft. bank and 221-unit multi-family housing complex with a 428-space multi-level parking garage and a pool on the 13-acres of land known as the United Water property, it seems as if the entire town is engaged in the conversation of what should go there. The children of the town are no exception. David E. Owens Middle School social studies teacher, Peter Galasso, challenged his class to design and develop a plan for how they would utilize the 13 vacant acres based on the articles that they have been following in Patch--from the filing of the site plans to the progress of the zoning board of adjustment hearings. Of the 15 designs …
