My biggest concern with the elementary school is their math program. It is failing our children and that is clearly reflected in their test scores. Regardless of how Ms. Shanley and Mr. Polizzi feel about Everyday Math, the truth is, it is a tremendous failure. How much longer will they cripple our kids?? 90%of educators say it has a negative effect on their students and many other districts …   more ›

DEO Middle School Students Win at Montclair University Film Competition

Students took third place in the competition featuring New Jersey and Pennsylvania schools

Future New Milford filmmakers were awarded third place in the Montclair State University's "French Day" student film competition last month by beating out fellow New Jersey and Pennsylvania students. The eighth grade David E. Owens Middle School class under the supervision of French language teacher Issam Helwani won with their entry “The Québec Café Catastrophe." The third-place video was an original creation set in Quebec where the student actors had to resolve a problem while only speaking French.  The film competition sought to educate students about the global status of the French language by drawing attention to the places and situations in which one can speak French in the world today.   “It is remarkable to see so many students …

New Milford Public Schools Help Victims of Hurricane Sandy

Schools raise over $3200 for schools in Moonachie and Little Ferry; clothing and cleaning supply drives help those around New Jersey.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, New Milford Public Schools coordinated their efforts to help neighboring communities affected by Hurricane Sandy. B.F. Gibbs Elementary School and David E. Owens Middle School donated over $3200 to schools in Moonachie and Little Ferry devastated by the tidal surge of the Hackensack River. The Gibbs School 'Spirit Club' ran a week-long small change drive. Other efforts were made by students, parents, and the Girl Scouts. There was even a 'movie night' to raise funds and collect school supplies for students in Moonachie and Little Ferry. Combined with DEOMS's candy sale, a significant donation was delivered to each school.  Additionally, the Spirit Club and staff at Berkley partnered with the Park Ridge …

Candidates Agree United Water Property is the No. 1 Issue

Philosophically aligned on most of the hot-button issues, 'Candidates Night' saw little controversy and much agreement.

The residents of New Milford face an interesting challenge when they go to the polls on November 6. On the hot-button issues of the United Water property and flood mitigation, all four council candidates are philosophically aligned. Nearly 100 people filled the cafeteria of the David E. Owens Middle School Wednesday to attend SOD's (Stop Over Development) first "Candidates Night," moderated by the League of Women Voters. Although the audience asked the candidates a variety of questions, the United Water property and flood mitigation dominated the evening and seeped into almost every answer to every question. At a disadvantage was former councilman, and current candidate, Peter Rebsch who could not state his position regarding the United …

Mr. Berner, I am still waiting for a reply. If you want people to vote for you, then you should be responsive to your constituents' questions. Why did you opt to not discuss this in a public session as I requested? Again, with a potential savings to the borough of $100,000, this is not a frivolous matter. The fiscally responsible decision would have been to explore this. Perhaps very valid …   more ›

'Field Of Dreams' Presentation Hosted By Board Of Education

Boswell Engineering delivers presentation on the design and cost of the proposed 'Field of Dreams' during recent Board of Education meeting.

While voters will have the final say on a proposed multi-use athletic field—dubbed the 'Field of Dreams'-- to be built at David E. Owens Middle School (DEOMS), Kevin Boswell of Boswell Engineering made a presentation regarding its design during September's Board of Education meeting. This field would be a shared service between the borough and the New Milford Board of Education. A PERC test was performed on the soil in June as a first step in determining if the DEOMS field can even be considered a viable contender. The results of that PERC soil test indicated that the middle school location would be an appropriate site for a turf field.  With costs estimated to be between $1.8 million (for clearing of site and the installation of a …

I totally agree with you Barbara. There are alot of elderly people in this neighborhood and they don't need crowds of people in their backyard. If it was true that there are not alot of games, why bother spending the money on a new field. This town has plenty of athletic fields, there is not much more to this town! I will def be voting it down in November!   more ›

Nine sixth graders and two seventh graders were recently inducted into the Teresa M. Martin chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at David E. Owens Middle School. The chapter was revived in 2009 and has since inducted 62 DEOMS students. DEOMS Principal Whitney Perro said, "The new members will carry on the traditions of service and scholarship." Prior to the ceremony, the DEOMS orchestra, under the direction of Mrs. Berenshtein, entertained the crowd. The ceremony began with the students entering, each carrying a single white rose, while the orchestra …
