New Milford High School Makes Newsweek's Ranking of Top High Schools

Ranking places New Milford High School in the top 3.8 percent of all high schools in the country and thirteenth in Bergen County.

New Milford High School has made it to Newsweek's ranking of top high schools in the country. Although its ranking of 1028 may seem modest, with more than 26,407 high schools nationwide, this puts New Milford in the top 3.8 percent in the country. New Milford is ranked 13 out of all of the high schools ranked in Bergen County. Danielle Shanley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, said that the ranking supports the long-term vision that the administration has been focused on for the past three years--a vision that includes making foundational changes that will better connect students to advanced learning and prepare them for college and beyond. Shanley not only credits the ranking with the district's commitment to increasing the number …

Academies Become Model for Neighboring Districts

The high school program is being looked at for potential replication in Cresskill and a New York school district

Created in 2011, the New Milford Academy program has quickly gained steam in the district and in the area as two school districts have initiated discussions to replicate New Milford's model. According to Danielle Shanley, the Diretor of Curriculum and Instruction, officials in Cresskill and a district in New York have expressed interest in creating their own Academy programs. The district offers three specialized programs: The Academy of Arts and Letters, The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy and The Academy for Global Leadership. Students in the Academy of Arts and Letters enroll in courses such as AP language and composition, music theory, or Rock of Ages, a study of popular culture through the development of rock-…

School Superintendent Addresses State Report Card

Superintendent Polizzi sits down with Patch to discuss State Report Card and how the administration's vision is putting into place long-term solutions.

The New Jersey Department of Education recently released report cards for the performance of every school in the state during the 2010-11 school year. The School Report Card provides a district-by-district overview of public school performance across the state, with information on student demographics and performance, staff information and district financial data.  School Superintendent Michael Polizzi and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Danielle Shanley sat down with Patch to review the results of New Milford's State report card and discuss the changes they have already implemented that will "systemically redesign programs." Polizzi also discussed his "holistic plan" they are continually developing to positively shape and design …

I absolutely agree that we need to focus on our youngest learners - there's much to improve upon. An aide in each k-2 classrooms would make a big difference. Also I don't agree that we can blame poor test scores on the fact that we have 16.5 spec Ed classification rate. That is way too high. The state is threatening not to fund over 14 percent special Ed. The only way to decrease this is ensure …   more ›

Team New Milford: Masters of the (Educational) Universe

Changing the face of education one paradigm at a time

There is nothing 'old school' about Superintendent Michael Polizzi and his core team of administrators: Director of Curriculum, Danielle Shanley; Business Administrator, Michael Sawicz; and Director of Special Services, Ray Dorso; not to mention the principals at the helm of each school whose encouraged innovation is changing the dynamics of how children learn. "There is synergy with this team of people," Polizzi commented as he looked around the table. "All the right people came together at the same time."   In explaining how he has managed to make such rapid changes in the New Milford School system in the two years since his appointment, Polizzi says, "Changes have to be rapid and radical; otherwise, why make the changes at all?"  And …

NMHS Academy Program

Patch visits the Academy in action

Last week while attending Edscape, Patch asked the principal of NMHS, Eric Sheninger, to explain the Academy program. Rather than talk about it, he invited Patch to come and visit the Academy to see it in action. Emphasis on action because there is nothing passive about New Milford High School's Academy program or the students and teachers who define it.  The best way to describe the Academy is to quote from the book "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho, that the Arts & Letter and Global Leadership groups were reading and discussing on the day of our visit: "When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."  In the case of these students, the administration and educators are working hard to expose as much of the…
