'Neo-Nazi' Ex-FDU Professor Claims Police Abuse

Ridgewood police, New Jersey state troopers named in federal lawsuit

A former Fairleigh Dickinson University professor linked to a neo-Nazi group has filed a civil rights lawsuit alleging he and his wife were victims of police brutality during a 2011 raid of his Ridgewood apartment.  Jacques Pluss, an ex-adjunct history and politics professor at FDU's Teaneck campus, claimed in the suit that state troopers and Ridgewood police burned him with a cigarette, dragged him, and threw him into a pile of ice and snow during his arrest for threats authorities say he made against an Anti-Defamation League official.  Then-girlfriend Jessica Stephens, who has since married Pluss, was "thrown into the cement walkway to be tightly zip tied and handcuffed which caused injury to her wrists and shoulders," the lawsuit …

New Location for Bergen Court to Open Tuesday in Hackensack

Court moved as part of effort to ease overcrowding at county justice complex.

The new location for Bergen County Central Municipal Court will open Tuesday in Hackensack, one step in a major renovation of the county’s justice complex. Officials will open the new location at 71 Hudson Street. The county has been renovating the building since last year. Central Municipal Court is unique to Bergen and generally handles summonses issued by county agencies. The busy court was located in the Bergen County Courthouse on Main Street. Bergen County Executive Kathleen Donovan has announced plans to rehabilitate the historic courthouse and surrounding justice complex. John L. TEANECK, NJ -- A jealous husband was behind the killing of a Teaneck man who was found shot to death last year in his charred Elm Avenue home, authorities charged Friday.  Sui Kam “Tony” Tung, 49, faces first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder and aggravated arson charges in the March 2011 death of Robert Cantor, according to a statement released Friday night by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Tung confronted Cantor at his home late the night of March 6, 2011 after learning of an affair between Tung’s estranged wife and Cantor, Prosecutor John Molinelli said in the statement. Man Charged in Teaneck DWI Crash Had Record of License Suspensions, Violations

New Milford man’s sister left with severe internal injuries, authorities say.

The New Milford man charged in a single-car River Road crash that left his sister hospitalized with serious internal injuries had his drivers license suspended nearly two dozen times, a state official said Tuesday. Alejandro J. Beasley Jr.’s license was suspended 23 times between January 2007 and January 2012, all for administrative reasons, according to state Motor Vehicle Commission spokesman Mike Horan. Administrative suspensions are issued for offenses including not paying surcharges and failure to appear in court. Beginning in April 2006, Beasley received 17 violations and had six points on his license, Horan said. Nine of the violations were for being an unlicensed driver, but none were for driving while intoxicated. Beasley, 27, was…

Bergen County Authorities Charge 27, Seize Cash in Prostitution Sweep

Prosecutor's Office targets 12 massage parlors across the county.

Bergen County authorities arrested 27 people and seized more than $27,000 in a weeklong prostitution sweep, Prosecutor John Molinelli said Monday. Half a dozen women were working as prostitutes at a Paramus hotel, Molinelli said. "Targeted during this investigation were numerous illegal massage parlors and in-call prostitution operations that have been operating in area hotels," Molinelli said in a statement.  Police arrested 11 people on March 15 as part of the anti-prostitution initiative. The 11 people were either prostitutes or their drivers,  Molinelli said. Ridgefield Park Man Sentenced for Gas Station Robberies in Teaneck, Nearby Towns

A Ridgefield Park man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Friday for robbing gas stations in Teaneck and other Bergen County towns,northjersey.com reported. Frederick V. Agodon, 34, told police he robbed the gas stations to pay his rent and child support, the report said. Agodon admitted to five robberies in Bergen County and one in Hudson County after being questioned by Teaneck police detectives, Patch reported last year. At his sentencing, Agodon’s attorney, Ana Tolentino, said he was not a violent person and argued he committed the robberies under duress, according to the northjersey.com report. Ex-Bergen Financing Chief Sentenced to 2 Years for Mortgage Fraud Scheme

Former Bergen County Improvement Authority chairman Ronald J. O’Malley was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday for a mortgage fraud scheme that falsely claimed mortgage borrowers worked at the county’s public financing agency, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said.   O’Malley, 48, a principal in Ridgewood-based mortgage brokerage firm Diversified Financial Group, was also hit with a $25,000 fine imposed by U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh. O’Malley and his coconspirators arranged for phony paystubs and W-2 forms to show borrowers worked at the BCIA, federal prosecutors said. Man Accused in Teaneck Murder Extradited to Bergen County

The man accused of murdering his estranged wife in Teaneck more than two weeks ago was returned to Bergen County Thursday after being caught in Florida, authorities said. Pedro Gutierrez, 24, of New Milford, was arrested Oct. 4 as he boarded a flight at Orlando International Airport hours after stabbing 23-year-old Shaday Betancourt, prosecutors said. A family member found Betancourt’s body at a house on East Forest Avenue and brought her to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, prosecutors said. Police said they found Gutierrez’s car at John F. Kennedy International Airport and discovered he had bought a one-way ticket to Colombia, with a stop over in Orlando.
