Board of Ed Stands By Decision to Enter Agreement with Hekemian, Attorneys Weigh In

The revelation that the Board of Education entered into a conceptual agreement with Hekemian for a 'field of dreams' has raised the temperature on the United Water property conversation.

The aftershocks of the revelation that the New Milford Board of Education (BOE) had entered into a separate agreement with the developer of the United Water property to receive a three-acre parcel of land to build a 'field of dreams' have rippled throughout community since Tuesday's meeting of the Zoning Board. Board of Education president, Darren Drake, said that the Board's approval of entering into a 'conceptual contract' with Hekemian for three-acres of property to construct a field of dreams-like "state of the art" athletic field is in line with the Board's vision of moving the district forward, athletically as well as academically. "As a Board, we are charged not only with the academic component of a superior education, but also the …

"Conceptual contract" includes Hekemian donation of 3 acres of property and a 'sizable' donation for BOE to construct an athletic stadium.

Jaws dropped and tensions mounted during Tuesday's Zoning Board meeting at the revelation that the New Milford Board of Education (BOE) had entered into a separate agreement with the developer of the United Water property to receive a parcel of land to build a 'field of dreams.'  Attorney for the applicant, Antimo "Andy" DelVecchio, informed the Zoning Board that Hekemian had entered into a "conceptual contract" with the New Milford BOE to donate "in excess" of three acres of property to construct a field of dreams-like "state of the art" athletic field and stadium on a parcel of property that is not subject to flooding. DelVecchio stressed that the developer is not building the athletic stadium, they are only donating the land and a "…

Hopefully, if he's going to the M&C to speak about the UW property, he'll stick to his original position wanting to keep this land as open space for a high school field, with a track. This type of field does not fit behind the proposed ShopRite and the builder needs the apartment component to help his case if it goes to court. So, even if the Superintendent came in with a compromise tonight, it's…   more ›

New Milford Recognizes Top Educators in Schools, District

During this week's Board of Education meeting, four teachers were honored as Teacher of the Year

The Greek philospher Socrates once said that "Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel," and New Milford schools are gifted with some of the brightest flames as the district honored its four Teachers of the Year and District Teacher of the Year this week. This year's honores are Nora Aivers (NMHS), Stacey Calise (Gibbs), Pamela Krause (DEOMS) and Dora Oliviero (Berkley). Oliviero was also named District Teacher of the Year. Polizzi Talks About His Letter to the Zoning Board, BOE's Position on Development

Superintendent Polizzi talks to Patch about his appearance before the Zoning Board, the letter he submitted to the Board, and the BOE's position on the development of the United Water property.

Superintendent Michael Polizzi wants to make one thing very clear. The Board of Education has been involved in the potential development of the United Water property before the plans were even filed. "What we have not been involved with to date, is attending the Zoning Board meetings regarding the development," he said. According to Polizzi, he and the Board of Education (BOE) do not believe that the property should be left completely undeveloped. Although they adamantly oppose any residential building, Polizzi said, "A certain degree of development would be good for the community, and what's good for the community is good for the schools." Polizzi said that the intent of his letter, that was supported by the BOE, was to make the Zoning …

We the taxpayers of New Milford voted down the Field of Dreams because of the tax burden placed on the citizens. The question here is why the Board of Education went into negotiations with Hekemian. Did any part of the Mayor and Council also participate in these backdoor talks? How did Hekemian come up with placing the Water Detention Basin on the Softball Field? This property belongs to the …   more ›

Letter to the Editor

Candidates for the Board of Education will appear on the same ballot as elected officials this Nov. 6.

Editor: This is a unique election year in New Jersey. For the first time, Board of Education candidates appear on the same ballot as the rest of our elected representatives. Especially with this being a presidential election year, many of us may forget to cast our votes for our local Board of Education candidates. I am writing to remind all registered voters to exercise your right to vote on this Election Day and, if you live in New Milford, to vote for Darren Drake and Joe Steele for the New Milford Board of Education. I served my community for 19 years on the board and I was fortunate enough to serve with both Darren and Joe for a few of those years. This is a time when experience really does matter. Overall, the NMBOE is an …
