United Water Property Hearings Begin, Mayor and Council Pass Anti-Semitism Resolution

The Week in Review: a roundup of top local news stories from the past week on New Milford Patch.

After months of speculation, the final approval process began on what is the most important development project in recent New Milford history. Hekemian began the process of obtaining "D" variance approval for what is known as the United Water property, a 16-acre tract of land near New Milford High School. United Water was granted a subdivision by the Planning Board in May, 2011. The developer, Paramus-based S. Hekemian Group, has entered into a contract with United Water to purchase 13 of the 16 acres. The New Milford Board of Adjustment hosted the first of what will be a series of meetings on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Borough Hall, before residents who filled the room to capacity. Athletic Field Committee Recommends Location of Multi-Purpose Field

Multi-purpose field to be shared by the schools and the town

The Athletic Field Committee recommended to the Mayor and Council Monday night that the David E. Owens Middle School is the location best suited to support a new multi-purpose field. This field would be a shared service between the borough and the New Milford Board of Education. Headed by Director of Recreation and Board of Education member John Bigger, the committee was appointed by Mayor Ann Subrizi to scout areas that could support a multi-purpose sports field after Hurricane Katrina and tropical storm Lee flooded the fields and prohibited New Milford sports teams from playing early fall home games. All of New Milford is a swamp just some areas worse than others however with the proper construction from a reputable field construction company our town will be able to enjoy many years out of a state of the art facility..Seems every other town my kids play sports against have been able to do it why not us...   more ›

Flooding and United Water Top the Agenda at Mayor & Council Meeting

Residents want United Water to address their concerns.

In Mayor Ann Subrizi's absence, Council President Howard Berner presided over Monday night's Mayor and Council meeting.  The public portion of the meeting was dominated by discussion of United Water and the recent flood. Councilwoman Celeste Scavetta informed the public that she and Subrizi met with a representative from United Water last week to discuss what United Water can do for the residents of New Milford in the event of future flooding.  Having read that United Water had set up a foundation to assist the towns of Westwood and Hillsdale with their clean-up efforts, Scavetta inquired if they would do the same for the residents of New Milford.
