Sophomore Car Wash a Splashing Success

Funds go to the Sophmore's senior year fund.

New Milford High School's Sophomore Class hosted a Car Wash this weekend at the high school. Each sophomore student was encouraged to pre-sell one $5 ticket. All proceeds from the car wash went into the Class of 2015 bank account where the money will be used towards senior year expenses such as the prom, yearbook, cap and gown and other costs. Fundraising during freshman through junior years helps to offset these costs. A troop of 25-30 volunteers showed up Saturday morning to hold up signs and encourage passing cars to stop in and get their car washed. According to Wendy Mackey, "I can't explain to you how proud I was of our community for coming out in droves. Some people pulled in with large vehicles and offered us more money because …

Hekemian's Deal with the BOE to Dominate Thursday's Zoning Board Meeting, and More This Week

Does the re-amended application constitute a new application? That's what opposing counsel, SOD and residents want to know.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment is holding a special meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. to continue the hearing of the proposed development of the United Water property by Hekemian. This meeting comes on the heels of the dramatic ending of last week's meeting when counsel for the developer announced that they had entered into a conceptual agreement with the New Milford Board of Education to donate three-acres of property, along with a 'sizable' donation, for a 'field of dreams.' Opposing counsel plans to petition the Board to consider this a new application, rather than an amendment to the existing application. Oradell attorney Louis Flora said that because the land will now have a different use, residents who live within 200 feet of the property …

I'm all for a field by the HS but not adjacent to a commercial complex. I'm also against turf because grants are not obtainable for those fields which means the burden is on the tax payers to pay for the millions this will cost. Tonight at 7PM there's a SOD meeting at the Senior Center. Friends and foes are invited, we have nothing to hide. Most of us in SOD feel there's a better alternative than…   more ›

Academy for Global Leadership Screening 'Girl Rising'

Tales of illness, vulnerability, poverty and oppression inspire incredible acts of courage, strength and optimism in nine young women.

New Milford High School's Academy for Global Leadership will be sponsoring a screening of Girl Rising, a film about nine young women from nine countries, written by nine writers and narrarated by nine actors. The film is based on the principle that telling stories about individual human beings and their particular circumstances is the most meaningful way and effective way to create understanding. The Academy for Global Leadership chose to screen the film to heighten the awareness of NMHS's student body who may not be aware that more than 77 million girls across the world are denied an education. In some cases, gender can be the single factor that launches a child into a life of unimaginable poverty, slavery, child marriage, prostitution …

What an informative sensitive documentary. My daughter and i loved lit. We took home the Feeling of being blessed for everything we have. The insane amounts of violence towards women and children on so many emotional levels that runs rapid in the countries in which women are not given the right to education. Reminds me of the same women who have no choice but to be stripped of their womanhood in …   more ›

Don Bosco Overpowers Bergen Catholic to Win County Title

Don Bosco pulled ahead and away from Bergen County in the third quarter to win their second consecutive county title.

The Don Bosco Ironmen outscored the Bergen Catholic Crusaders 5-1 in the third quarter of the finals in the Bergen County Lacrosse Tournament. That scoring outburst made all the difference and propelled the Ironmen to a 10-6 victory and their second straight Bergen County championship. The Ironmen had a rough go of it in the first half. Bergen Catholic goalie Matt Pedrick was on point early on and held the Ironmen to just three first-half goals.  “They came out playing hard. We were struggling with our shots and their goalie played really well," said Don Bosco captain Teddy Sisco-Tolomeo.  Don Bosco looked like a different team in the second half. They came out very aggressive, snatched control of the game and never looked back.   "In the …

New Milford High School Makes Newsweek's Ranking of Top High Schools

Ranking places New Milford High School in the top 3.8 percent of all high schools in the country and thirteenth in Bergen County.

New Milford High School has made it to Newsweek's ranking of top high schools in the country. Although its ranking of 1028 may seem modest, with more than 26,407 high schools nationwide, this puts New Milford in the top 3.8 percent in the country. New Milford is ranked 13 out of all of the high schools ranked in Bergen County. Danielle Shanley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, said that the ranking supports the long-term vision that the administration has been focused on for the past three years--a vision that includes making foundational changes that will better connect students to advanced learning and prepare them for college and beyond. Shanley not only credits the ranking with the district's commitment to increasing the number …

Rock 4 Life Benefit Concert at New Milford High School

A rock concert to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the New Milford High School BUDDY program.

The New Milford Board of Education, New Milford Recreation and the New Milford BUDDY program is presenting Rock 4 Life, a rock concert to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the New Milford High School BUDDY program. The Rock 4 Life concert was the brainchild of Kelly Norton who wanted to use music as a way to raise awareness on the effects of bullying. Norton's band will be performing at the concert. Her music also supports suicide awareness. The concert, taking place May 19 at New Milford High School, will interfuse live music with presentations and videos about the effects of bullying. Norton, who works in New Milford High School's athletic department, knows the effects of bullying first-hand because she said that…
