Leonia Fire Department “temporarily suspended” after alleged sex assault at firehouse, official says.
Leonia’s volunteer fire department has been “temporarily suspended” and firefighters from Teaneck and Fort Lee are covering fire calls in the borough after a teenager was accused of sexually abusing a 3-year-old boy at the borough’s fire headquarters, a Leonia official said Monday. The Teaneck Fire Department is handling emergency calls on Leonia’s west side while Fort Lee crews cover the east side, Borough Administrator Jack Terhune said. “Right now it’s temporarily suspended pending action by the mayor and council in a reorganizational effort and I don’t know how long that will take,” Terhune said of the borough’s fire department. “It’s just temporarily been suspended.” Leonia’s borough council was set to take up the issue at a meeting …

Teen charged with abusing 3-year-old boy at Leonia firehouse.
An 18-year-old developmentally disabled student at a Teaneck school is accused of sexually assaulting a 3-year-old boy at the Leonia firehouse, according to authorities and published reports. In a statement released Sunday, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said Darius E. Levine, of Leonia, was arrested Friday after the boy told his father about the abuse. Levine “engaged in inappropriate sexual activity with a three year old male acquaintance,” Molinelli said, but did not release additional details. Leonia police were alerted and called in investigators from the prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit, the statement said. Levine, a student at Community High School in Teaneck, was charged with one count of second-degree sexual assault …

Bergen County OEM is reporting that the storm has shifted its weight outside of Bergen County.
The track of the storm has shifted north with the heaviest rain falling north and south of Bergen County, leaving our local area with less rain than previously forecasted, Chief Frank Papapietro said. "Because the weight of the storm has shifted away from our area, Bergen County Office of Emergency Management is cancelling the flood watch for the entire local area with this afternoon’s forecast update," Papapietro said. Despite the changed forecast, Mayor Ann Subrizi said that she is still monitoring the river with the next high tide scheduled for 2 a.m. Friday. According to the National Weather Service, the developing line of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move east across the region Thursday evening. A few storms could produce …
Potential flooding expected if storm stays on track to deliver 3-4 inches of rain to Bergen County.
United Water began releasing water from the Oradell Reservoir midnight Thursday upon orders from Governor Christie after the National Weather Service issued the third flood watch in a week for Bergen County and much of the tri-state area Wednesday, according to New Milford Mayor Ann Subrizi. Subrizi spoke with representatives from United Water who said that they were releasing water from the Oradell Reservoir to make room for the water coming from the release of the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir. Oradell is the lowest reservoir on the reservoir chain. Subrizi stressed that she and Police Chief Frank Papapietro, who also heads the Office of Emergency Management, are closely monitoring the storm and will provide updates as they become available…
The National Weather Service warned of potential flooding in Bergen County Thursday through Saturday morning.
Updated at 8:07 a.m. Thursday. United Water began releasing water from the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir Wednesday after the National Weather Service issued the third flood watch in a week for Bergen County and much of the tri-state area Wednesday, according to Westwood Mayor John Birkner. The watch lasts from Thursday morning through Saturday morning. As of 7 a.m. Thursday, water in the reservoir was at elevation 94.05. The drawdown came just one day after engineers who prepared a report about the upcoming dam project said that releasing the water will not necessarily mitigate flooding, but a tool to predict the best time to release water in order to reduce some flooding could likely be created by studying the reservoir and brook. The NWS has …

Flood watch in effect for Bergen County until Saturday morning.
Chief of Police Frank Papapietro is advising New Milford residents of a flood watch that is in effect for Bergen County until Saturday morning. In anticipation of the storm, he sent a reverse 911 out this afternoon notifying residents of the impending storm. According to Papapietro, current weather forecasts predict heavy rainfall beginning early Thursday morning and continuing through early Friday morning resulting in approximately 3 to 4 inches of rain throughout Bergen County. Winds are expected to be 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 to 40 mph during the evening hours. "We are watching this storm very carefully in light of the fact that the ground is already saturated from the recent rainfall," he said. Papapietro is asking residents to …
Engineers hired by Hillsdale to review United Water's dam plan said the project would not worsen flooding downstream.
Engineers from GEI Consultants said Tuesday that United Water's upcoming project at the Woodcliff Lake Dam would not worsen flooding downstream along the Pascack Brook, and a change in dam operations to carefully release water from the reservoir before storms could likely mitigate some flooding. Flood-prone residents said that the Pascack Brook is usually full by the time the reservoir reaches capacity. United Water typically begins slowly lowering the dam's two gates once the water hits elevation 95.25, the highest level it can hold. Engineers who prepared the report said that it is possible to develop tools which better predict when would be best to lower the dam gates before a storm hits. Simply releasing water ahead of a storm without …

Proposed bill would allow police officers to search cell phones after accidents. Supporters say it will help curb distracted driving-related incidents. Opponents say it violates drivers' rights.
When stopped by police, motorists usually are asked to present a driver's license and registration. If a bill just introduced before the state Senate becomes law, cell phones could be added to that list. The legislation, sponsored by state Sen. James Holzapfel (R-Ocean), would allow police to search a driver's cell phone without a warrant to determine if he or she was talking or texting immediately prior to a motor vehicle accident, according to an NJ.com report. Those in favor of the measure say it will give law enforcement officers—who must have "reasonable grounds" to demand the phone—an important asset in investigating crashes involving distracted driving, the article said. Using a cell phone while driving is a violation of New Jersey …
