Fun Facts About Memorial Day

Memorial Day began in the South as a way to honor the Confederate dead.

Memorial Day is one of those holidays that we all celebrate, but we're not quite sure why. Although it has become the unofficial start of summer, it began as a holiday with Confederate ties. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day during post-Civil War Reconstruction in the South. It began as a day Confederate women decorated the graves of Civil War veterans. Or, the veterans of the War Between the States as the Civil War will forever be called south of Washington D.C.  The first Decoration Day was proclaimed on May 5th, 1868, to be observed on May 30th, by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was not until the end of World War I that the federal government began to commemorate all …

This first round of approval was just step one as the mall will now have to return to the Zoning Board for major site plan approval.

The addition of a movie theater is now in Paramus Park Mall's future. The mall got unanimous approval Thursday night from the Paramus Zoning Board of Adjustment to use 88,000 square feet of previously approved expansion space for a movie theater and a restaurant. Three hours of testimony Thursday included discussion surrounding the requested height variance - 60 feet with an additional 5 feet of screening - over the required 36 feet as well as a variance for the 4,445 parking spaces proposed as opposed to the 5,039 required. The mall also sought relief from a previous condition that only 50 percent of the expansion space be used for non-retail. By approving the use, the percentage of the mall's non-retail use increases from 10 percent to …
