Recognized for Giving Their Time

The Bergen County YJCC honored the volunteers for the Senior Department

Volunteers for the Senior Department of the in Washington Township were given certificates and gifts for their service during the annual volunteer recognition ceremony Tuesday.

Senior Adult Director Devra Kanter said it was the 18th volunteer recognition program where individuals are honored for making "the Senior Department such a special place."

Kanter said volunteers participate by teaching classes, helping with lunchroom tasks and driving people to the YJCC, among others.

When she addressed the group Tuesday, Kanter recited a quote she had found. "Volunteers are seldom paid not because they are worthless but because they are priceless," she said.

After handing out the certificates, the volunteers and members of the senior group were treated to a concert by three young musicians: two violinists and a pianist.

Stephanie Xu, 13, of Hillsdale performed Mendelssohn's Concerto in B Minor, First Movement. She has been playing violin for five years and studies at Zhang's Violin Studio in Tenafly.

"I found a violin in my closet and I became addicted to it," she said.

Ben and Mi Jung Lee, brother and sister from Paramus, also performed at the YJCC. Mi Jung, 21, was born in Korea and started playing the piano at age 3. She just graduated from the Manhattan School of Music's undergraduate program and will soon be starting her graduate studies there. During Tuesday's performance, she accompanied both her brother and Xu.

Ben, 17, will be an undergrad at the Manhattan School of Music in the fall. He performed two pieces Tuesday.

Ben said he wanted to get involved in music because of Mi Jung. "My sister used to play violin and I guess I got jealous," he said.
