Living History on the Hudson: The Historic Kearney House to Host Summer Series

Despite the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy, the Historic Kearny House on the Hudson launches its summer evening series Tuesday.

The record storm surge from Hurricane Sandy pushed over four feet of water into the Historic Kearney House, a 19th century Hudson River tavern in Alpine, toppling its 250-year-old stone front wall. The house was saved from collapse, but restoration efforts remain ongoing throughout the summer.

Despite that, the staff that maintains and interprets the house for the public felt it was important to try to keep the annual summertime programs going. “Behind the Times” has been scheduled again this year, to be held just outside the house.

On Tuesday evenings, July 16, and 23, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., staff dressed in period garb will take the big tavern table out of the house to put lemonade and watermelon out for visitors. They will share tales of life along the river, and instruct children of all ages in the techniques of “hoops” and “graces” and other period amusements.

Thaddeus MacGregor, a musician and teacher from Englewood, will entertain visitors with music and songs of Mrs. Kearney’s day. At around 8:15 each evening, historical interpreter Eric Nelsen will read aloud from a story, poem, or essay from the period.

The programs are free and open to all. No reservations are needed, and visitors are welcome to come and go as they wish over the course of the evening.
