Updated: Three Officers Allegedly Assaulted While Attempting to Execute A Warrant

An additional charge of attempting to disarm an officer will be added to the three original charges filed against Lau, according to NMPD Chief Frank Papapietro

Officers from New Milford and Oradell were assaulted late Thursday afternoon as they attempted to execute a warrant, police said.

New Milford Detective Brian Long and Oradell Police Officer Victor Egg were attempting to arrest 48-year-old Michael Lau on Harrison Street at 4:40 p.m. when Lau "assumed a fighting stance" and refused to be arrested, police said.

The officers asked Lau to lower his hands, according to police, and informed the suspect that pepper spray would be used if he did not comply with their instructions. Police said Lau began kicking and punching the officers and was then "taken to the ground."

Police said Lau then tried to bite Long and attempted to remove Egg's weapon from its holster. The officers then used pepper spray on Lau after he refused to stop resisting and was eventually taken into custody with the help of additional officers, police said.

Lau was brought to the New Milford police headquarters, where he was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, one count of resisting arrest and one count of obstructing the administration of law, police said. Police Chief Frank Papapietro said Friday that an additional charge will be filed against Lau--attempting to disarm a police officer which is a second degree crime.

Lau was then taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center for treatment, according to police.

Before being taken to the Bergen County Jail, Closter Municipal Court Judge Paul Bottinelli set bail at $10,000 cash.

New Milford Police Officer Giovanni Russino was treated at Holy Name Hospital for injuries to his right shoulder.  Egg was also treated at Holy Name for an elbow injury. Long reported blood on his right hand.
