Teaneck Men Face Charges in String of Burglaries

Prosecutor says burglary tools, suspected stolen goods found in township man's home; River Edge police part of county-led investigative task force.

Authorities have charged two Teaneck men suspected in a string of daytime burglaries at homes in Bergen County and Connecticut, the county prosecutor’s office said Monday.

A task force of investigators had 25-year-old Shakir Major under surveillance May 21 when he drove from Teaneck to Oxford Drive in Tenafly early that afternoon, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement. Minutes after Major pulled away, Tenafly police discovered an area home had been burglarized.

Detectives caught Major in Dumont, where he was arrested without incident, according to Molinelli. Using a search warrant, the task force turned up a stash of suspected stolen goods and burglary tools at Major’s Teaneck home, the prosecutor said.

Later that night, Teaneck police arrested the second burglar, 26-year-old Diandre Mikell, on an unrelated matter, Molinelli said. He was also charged in the Tenafly break-in.

Both men were charged with burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary and theft. Police in Greenwich, Conn., also charged Major in connection with an April 19 attempted burglary in the wealthy suburb, Molinelli said.

Major was already in custody when Franklin Lakes police charged him last week with stealing cash and jewelry from a borough home.

Mikell has been eyed in other burglary cases, some allegedly targeting high-end homes around North Jersey, authorities have said.

The county-led task force included investigators from more than 20 police departments, including Teaneck, Englewood, Fort Lee, Dumont, River Edge and Leonia.
