Severe Storm Hit the Borough and Surrounding Area

Hail and high winds pummeled the area Friday night

Hail, high winds, intense lightening and thunder hit the borough and most of Bergen County hard Friday night.

NMPD Chief Frank Papapietro said there were a few incidents of wires being down as well as tree limbs but otherwise no other major incidents reported as of 8 p.m. on Friday.

"Right now the river is well below flood stage but with the amount of rain that fell in a short period of time residents in low lying areas should take the necessary precautions," said Papapietro.

A portion of Columbia Street was flooded Friday night and residents were seen moving their cars to higher ground around 8:30 p.m. Old New Bridge Road also experienced minor flooding.

According to several passengers, a New Jersey Transit train stalled at Oradell Avenue in front of the Oradell Train Station during the height of the storm, temporarily blocking the crossing.

The NMFD responded to a house fire on Hickory Avenue in Bergenfield. The fire was believed to have been started by a lightning strike on the roof of the house, according to fire officials.
