River Edge Woman Struck by Train Dies

Pastora Reyes, 54, of River Edge was struck by a train late Tuesday afternoon

A 54-year-old River Edge resident who was on the Pascack Valley line at New Bridge Landing station Tuesday has died, police said.

She was identified late Wednesday morning as Pastora Reyes by New Jersey Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder.

Reyes was struck on the west side of the train tracks by a Hoboken-bound train. According to police and witnesses she was not walking at a grade crossing.

"The engineer observed the trespasser standing on the north side of the station and she began to start walking across the tracks," Snyder said. "He applied the emergency brakes and sounded the horn but was unable to stop in time."

Following the accident, Reyes was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with severe head injuries but succumbed to her injuries overnight, according to River Edge Police Chief Thomas Cariddi.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time.

Service on the rail line was suspended for about 90 minutes after the accident Tuesday, with passengers transferred to buses to travel the remainder of their trips. None of the 45 passengers on board the train that stuck Reyes were injured.
