Regional Cooling Centers to Open Thursday

County residents who need to avoid the extreme heat can head to one of four cooling centers around the county

Bergen County officials announced they are opening four regional cooling centers for residents who must avoid the heat but don't have access to air conditioning.

  • One Bergen County Plaza, Multi-Purpose Room, Hackensack
  • Northwest Bergen Senior Activity Center, 46-50 Center Street, Midland Park
  • Bergenfield Senior Center, 239 Murray Hill Terrace, Bergenfield
  • South West Bergen Activity Center, 147 Hackensack Street, East Rutherford

County officials said the centers will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as needed on Thursday, June 9.

The centers are being opened in response to the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory for Bergen County through Thursday at 8 p.m.

"Temperatures are expected to climb to near 100 degrees and with the high humidity, the heat indices will reach 103 degrees," said county officials in an e-mail. "Temperatures are expected to drop to 71 degrees later Thursday evening."
