Police: Thefts Reported From Cars Over Holiday Weekend

Windows left open in one case, doors unlocked in the other

The NMPD said two borough residents were the victims of theft over the holiday weekend.

Police said items were stolen from the two cars sometime between midnight on July 4 and 8 a.m. on July 5.

NMPD Officer Brian Finale responded to the first reported theft of a Garmin Nuvi GPS and house keys which were taken from a 2009 Honda Pilot.

"The center console and glove compartment were in the open position," police said. "Various personal effects were scattered within the vehicle interior."

Finale advised the resident to have the locks on their home changed as a precaution. Police said one of the residents heard a noise shortly before midnight but they did not "investigate further."

NMPD Officer Brian Clancy responded to the second theft involving a 1994 Ford Explorer.

Police said the owner had left the vehicle unlocked and discovered that the door was not completely closed when they went out to the car on the morning of July 5.

"He saw his middle console was left wide open and all of his loose change was missing from his cupholder," according to police reports. "Victim noticed his screw gun (approximately $100) and his vehicle emergency kit were also both missing."

Police said the resident did not see or hear anything suspicious during the night.

Both cases were turned over to the NMPD Detective Bureau for further investigation.
