New Milford Man Charged with Impersonating Cop

A 46-year-old New Milford man was arrested early Tuesday on charges ranging from simple assault to carrying a loaded handgun and impersonating a New York City police sergeant. 

Paul Andreu was arrested after a domestic violence restraining order was issued against him Monday, New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro said Tuesday. According to Papapietro, those charges included the threat to kill and simple assault. 

"Officers were aware that Andreu possessed firearms and were armed with a search warrant for a handgun and shotgun he allegedly owned," Papapietro said. 

Andreu was arrested when he returned home from his job as a terminal supervisor for N.J. Transit shortly after midnight Tuesday by Officers Nelson Perez, Frank Haggerty and Bryan Mone. Upon his arrest, a search revealed that Andreu had a concealed, loaded Glock 40 caliber handgun in his waistband, Papapietro said.  

"The weapon was loaded with 40 caliber hollow point bullets," Papapietro said.

According to Papapietro, a further search revealed that Andreu was carrying a gold New York City Sergeant shield and three I.D. cards from the New York City Police Dept. identifying him as a sergeant. Andreu was also in possession of a fake pistol carrying permit, Papapietro said

Andreu has been charged with simple assault, criminal mischief, threat to kill, illegal possession of a firearm without permits, illegal possession of a concealed firearm, impersonating a police officer and possession of fraudulent documents.

Bail was set at $35,000 with no 10 percent option. Andreu has been remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail.

Papapietro said that New York City Police Internal Affairs has been notified and has joined the investigation.
