Police Investigating String of Weekend Car Burglaries

Police urge residents to keep their vehicles locked.

are urging residents to keep their car doors locked after a string of weekend car burglaries and thefts. 

Chief of Police Frank Papapietro said that a car was reported burglarized Saturday on Berkley Street. A small amount of money and a GPS device were taken, along with a bag of school books from the trunk. Papapietro said that the bag of books was recovered nearby.

There were two incidents reported Sunday. Papapietro said registration and computer discs were stolen from a vehicle parked on Linden Place between the hours of 1 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. and a spare tire was removed from the rear door of the second vehicle parked in the lot at on River Road somewhere between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

According to Papapietro, the vehicles were unlocked.

Papapietro warned that car burglaries are on the rise throughout Bergen County.

"Residents should be careful not to leave valuables in their vehicles," he said. "Valuables stored in the truck are vulnerable also if the vehicle is unlocked as most vehicles are equipped with a trunk release on the dashboard."
