Police Investigating Possible Bias Crime at Teaneck’s Richard Rodda Center

Wireless device was reportedly broadcasting "offensive" network name, police said.

An "offensive" wireless network name reported Tuesday at the  is being investigated as a possible bias crime, Teaneck police said in a statement today.

Police released few details about the incident, but said a wireless network router was found broadcasting an offensive network name. Police located the router at the center and secured it as evidence. Wireless routers can be configured by the user to broadcast any network name to other nearby computers. 

Police declined to elaborate on the nature of the offensive message, citing an ongoing investigation.

The discovery comes after a string of hate crimes targeting the Jewish community across Bergen County, but police said there was no known link between the Teaneck incident and the other cases. 

“At this time there is no known connection between this incident and others that have been reported in and around the Bergen County area,” a police statement said.

Teaneck's Juvenile Bureau and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Computer Crime Unit are investigating, the statement said.
