Police: Four Charged With Shoplifting Outside CVS

More than $2,500 worth of merchandise was recovered

The NMPD said officers responded to a report of a suspicious car with New York license plates in the parking lot at Madison Plaza near the CVS around 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Officer Kevin Morris and Det. Brian Long, "observed ... two bags on the rear floor of the vehicle to contain a large amount of over the counter medications (Allegra, Mucinex, Rogaine)," according to police reports.

Police said NMPD Officers Brian Clancy, Mark O’Brien and Nicholas DiGenio also responded and detained three women who were seen leaving the CVS.

"Store video showed the females concealing merchandise and then dumping the merchandise prior to leaving the store," said police reports. "None of the parties could produce receipts for their merchandise in the vehicle."

The officers transported the three women and one male back to police headquarters.

"During the investigation the three females attempted to pass themselves off as juveniles and gave false information to the investigating officers," police said.

The NMPD said the women admitted they entered the store with the intention to steal merchandise.

"They stated they were picked up in NY by the vehicle operator and were told what items to steal," police said. "They were to be given a percentage of what they stole.  They stated that the driver served as a lookout and would communicate with them while they were in the store which is why they dumped the merchandise."

The NMPD said some of the merchandise recovered contained tags from the CVS at 50 West Madison Ave. in Dumont and possibly the CVS at 880 River Road in New Milford.

Police said the total amount of merchandise recovered was $1,314.87. 

"A consent search of the vehicle, obtained from the registered owner who was not present, revealed numerous boxes of Mucinex and Rogaine," police reports said.  

Deshante Gilbert ,19, Angeberta Hernandez, 21, and Tanzee Wilcox, 20, all of the Bronx were charged with shoplifting and receiving stolen property.  They were released after processing pending further court action, according to the NMPD.

Theotto Stevenson, 30, of Ozone Park., N.Y. was the driver of the vehicle and was also charged with shoplifting and receiving stolen property. His bail was set by Judge Kevin Kelley at $1,000 with 10 percent .  He was processed and posted bail.

The NMPD said they are continuing their investigation and other charges are pending. Long said all four were also charged on Friday with conspiracy to commit shoplifting and an additional shoplifting charge for the theft at the CVS at 880 River Road. Long said both are third degree crimes and all four will be served with the charges when they come to court.
