Police Chief Warns Residents of Potential Chimney Cleaning Scam

Beware of unsolicited phone calls from contractors.

Chief of Police Frank Papapietro is warning residents of a possible contractor scheme targeting chimney work. A borough resident received a phone call Saturday from an alleged chimney company saying that they were conducting mandatory chimney cleanings in the borough.

The unidentified male caller informed the resident that the cost of the cleaning would be $35 and wanted to schedule the resident's cleaning for Monday. When the resident asked for the company's number so that he could call them back, the caller hung up.

Papapietro said that any resident receiving a phone call from an alleged contractor stating they will be conducting "mandatory chimney work" on your home should immediately notify New Milford Police.

"Reputable contractors will always secure a permit from the municipal building office," he said. "Contact the building department at 201-967-5044 before hiring a contractor and check with the Better Business Bureau."
