NMPD Responds to Call of Man Attempting Suicide

Police searched for the man for three hours after he fled as officers arrived at his home.

New Milford Police were dispatched to a River Road apartment shortly after midnight Friday, on a report of a 26-year-old man attempting to hang himself with an electrical cord. 

The person who called police successfully removed the cord from the man's neck, authorities said. Police said the man, whose name was not released, ran from the apartment through the kitchen window. 

New Milford Police Sergeants John O’Malley and Kevin Kiene and Officers Nelson Perez and Richard Giacobone, Jr. conducted an extensive search of the area, eventually apprehending the man three hours later with help from neighboring police departments and a cell phone company.

At 2:30 a.m., Sprint notified police of a tracking hit on the man’s phone and provided a location within 900 feet of Washington Avenue and Liberty Road on the Bergenfield/Teaneck border, police said. 

The man was apprehended at a store in the area around 3 a.m. and taken to police headquarters. He was transported to Bergen Regional Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.

Police were assisted by the Bergen County Police K-9 Unit, Dumont Police Department and Bergenfield Police Department.
