New York Emergency Alert Test Could Impact NJ Cell Phones

Test planned for Thursday

A test Thursday in New York City of a cell phone emergency alert system could impact some New Jersey wireless customers, officials said.

The test will take place from around 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to state officials.

Cell phone users with questions should call their wireless carrier.

“Customer service representatives have been informed of the new technology and are aware of the test,” said a statement issued by the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management.

The test is being conducted by the City's Office of Emergency Management, phone companies and the federal government.

The announcement comes after Verizon’s unannounced emergency alert test caused a scare in parts of the state.
