National Night Out Offers Safe Fun Tuesday

A joint venture between the NMPD and the community

Preparations are already well underway for tonight's National Night Out behind Borough Hall. 

The event takes place on the fields behind Borough Hall on August 2 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Borough officials said it is a "town block party" and will feature music, rides and food along with representatives from many community organizations and businesses.

NMPD Officers Keith Wester and Bill Wilde, the community policing officers, have been busy coordinating this event which brings the police and the community together for a safe, fun family-oriented evening. 

The event is part of a national program sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

"Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states," according to the group's website. "In all, over 37 million people participated in National Night Out 2010."

According to its website, National Night Out is designed to:

  • heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
  • generate support for local anticrime programs
  • strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
  • send a message to criminals letting them know residents are organized and fighting back
