Man Accused in Teaneck Murder Extradited to Bergen County

The man accused of  in Teaneck more than two weeks ago was returned to Bergen County Thursday after being caught in Florida, authorities said.

Pedro Gutierrez, 24, of New Milford, was arrested Oct. 4 as he boarded a flight at Orlando International Airport hours after stabbing 23-year-old Shaday Betancourt, prosecutors said.

A family member found Betancourt’s body at a house on East Forest Avenue and brought her to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center where she was pronounced dead, prosecutors said.

Police said they found Gutierrez’s car at John F. Kennedy International Airport and discovered he had bought a one-way ticket to Colombia, with a stop over in Orlando. Authorities said evidence was found in the car, but have not released details. 

Investigators believe a pending divorce could have sparked the killing, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said after the arrest.

Gutierrez had been held at the Orange County Jail in Florida while his extradition was finalized. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning and was being held without bail at the Bergen County Jail, authorities said.
