Fort Lee Firefighter Charged in Death of Infant Son

Michael Marrara Jr. facing charges of aggravated manslaughter relating to the death of his 10-week-old son in March of 2012.

The father of a 10-week old infant family members claimed died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) last March has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, Prosecutor John L. Molinelli confirmed Tuesday.

Michael Marrara Jr., 32, of Fort Lee, was also charged Tuesday with hindering apprehension and endangering the welfare of a child related to the death of his son, Andrew Jeremy Marrara, Molinelli said. Marrara posted $250,000 bail Tuesday night, jail records show. Molinelli did not provide further details on the investigation.

"A year ago today you were born and we were blessed for ten beautiful weeks," family members wrote on Jan. 13, 2013 in memoriam of Andrew. "Then SIDS took you from us. Happy 1st Birthday in Heaven, little man. We love and miss you every day."

Marrara, a volunteer with Engine Company No. 1 at the Fort Lee Fire Department, has been suspended from his firefighting duties.

"Because of the charges, according to the fire department's policy, Marrara was suspended from the Fort Lee Fire Department until the disposition of his court case," Fort Lee Fire Chief Mark Sulcov said.
