Flood Warning Extended for New Milford

Residents received a Reverse 911 to advise them of street closures and the potential for more flooding

Borough residents received a Reverse 911 call today advising them of street closures and the potential for more flooding following Sunday's downpour.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning through 1:15 p.m. The Hackensack River in New Milford was measured at 7.11 feet and rising around 11 a.m. this morning. The flood stage is six feet.

"There were people evacuated in Hillsdale and Westwood and a portion of Main Street in Lodi is closed," said New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro. "That's our barometer to gauge potential flooding in the borough."

Papapietro said Columbia Street houses had water up to their yards, but none to the level that would require evacuations. The intersection of Madison and Main Street is closed and the high school field is currently under water, according to the chief.

Lennox Avenue and Washington are also closed to due flooding. Old New Bridge Road had flooding that goes with the tide. High tide was around 11 a.m. Monday.

"We have had no evacuations here in New Milford," said Papapietro. "We closed several streets in low lying areas since there is the potential for cars to stall out if they attempt to drive through the water."

The NMPD has set up detours around closed streets so that residents can still access their homes.

Papapietro said his officers out on patrol will continue to monitor the situation. The chief said he would also be driving around Monday checking on areas of the borough that are prone to flooding.
