Borough to Receive FEMA Money for December Blizzard

New Milford was notified that it would receive more than $20,000

The borough recently learned that it was awarded money to reimburse costs associated with the handling of the December 26, 2010 blizzard.

"There was $30,681.46  in allowable expenses submitted to FEMA for the Dec. 26, 2010 blizzard," said NMPD Chief Frank Papapietro. "FEMA will reimburse us for 75 percent or $23,011.09."

Papapietro said the amount was intended to reimburse the borough for DPW overtime and equipment use during the storm.

"In past storms they also paid for straight time, but it was not the case this time," said Papapietro. "They only allowed for a 48 hour period during the course of the cleanup so I had to look to see which days gave us the most return."

The borough was also pleasantly surprised by an additional payment from FEMA.

"We also received an additional $11,000 for the March 2010 storm for sidewalk repairs," said Papapietro. "It came as a surprise since all the other items submitted [for that storm] were reimbursed in December."

"FEMA no longer cuts individual checks," Papapietro said. "All reimbursements are deposited electronically."

The borough is currently awaiting the release of these electronic funds.
