Bergen County Police Chiefs Remember 9/11

Bergen County Police Chiefs hold 9/11 memorial service at the Westfield Garden State Plaza.

The Bergen County Police Chiefs Association held a memorial service at the Tuesday commemorating those lives lost in the terrorist attacks on the 11th anniversary of September 11.

Police Chiefs, ranked officers, police officers and members of the public gathered before the memorial that was originally dedicated by the Chiefs on September 11, 2002, while members of the Police Pipes and Drums of Bergen County played.

According to Cliffside Park Police Chief Donald Keane, who serves as the 1st Vice President of the Chiefs Association, the Chiefs Association wanted to dedicate a memorial where it would be seen by everyone and not just those in emergency services.

"There's a memorial at the Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah, but the Garden State Plaza is the crossroads of Bergen County," Keane said. "We hope that everyone who passes this memorial will take a moment to reflect on the events of that day and honor those who lost their lives everyday, and not just once a year on the anniversary."

For New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro, September 11 is a day that can never be forgotten. “We remember so much because there’s so much we can’t forget.”
