Will Saturday Be A Big Day For Small Business In New Milford?

New Milford merchants hope you skip the mall madness Saturday support locally-owned businesses.

Sandwiched between the two busiest shopping days of the season, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Saturday is the second annual "Small Business Saturday," and local merchants are hoping it's a boon to business.

The slogan of the American Express campaign is "If millions of Americans shop small, it will be huge."

As residents drive around New Milford and see storefronts that have been vacated in the last few years, it's evident how difficult it has been for small business owners. Many business owners had the added expenses of flood damage and clean-up this year.

Businesses are hoping shoppers kick-off the holiday season by frequenting the shops of people who choose to root their business in New Milford.

This is by no means a comprehensive list; it's a roundup of some of the businesses we've managed to cover since we launched in New Milford last year. Please let us know in the comments section which local establishments are your favorite.

Wine & Roses and Garden Cafe: Both belong to Lou Denis who is the undisputed mayor of the corner of Henley Street and River Road. Garden Cafe is where you will see many of your neighbors on a Saturday morning. This is a great local joint.

Garden Cafe is located at 160 Henley Ave., New Milford.

Wine & Roses offers the best in wine, liquor and floral arrangements. People from all around Bergen County order from Lou and his brother Chris. They can also make gift baskets of wine--the perfect gift for those difficult people on your holiday list.

Wine & Roses is located at 710 River Rd., New Milford.

If you are looking for a home town feel go to Harvey's Appliances. Trying to ease the pain for those residents of New Milford who experienced flooding damage, Harvey's offered customers a discount on appliances after the flood. What chain store would do that for you? Washers, dryers, refrigerators, ovens--at Harvey's you need it, you name it.

Harvey's Appliances is located at 690 River Rd., New Milford.

Jersey Boys: Great bar to watch the games at! Burgers, sadwiches, salads--no matter what you're in the mood for, Jersey Boys aims to please. So versatile that you can bring the kids and have a fun family night, or hire a sitter and have a great date night. The best part? It's so close to home!

Jersey Boys is located at 704 River Rd., New Milford.

Roman Pizza and Restaurant: Just the fact that this was one of the restaurants that helped out during Irene by donating food to the Labor Day of Love barbecue is reason enough to support them. That and the fact that they have terrific pizza and Italian food.

Roman Pizza and Restaurant is located at 858 River Rd., New Milford.

Town & Country Rentals: Town and Country Rentals is a party planning and event service located right on Main Street that offers a wide variety of party items, accessories and services, including bars and dance floors, tables and linens, punch fountains, party equipment, glassware, tableware, chairs, grills and chafing dishes. They also helped to outfit the Labor Day of Love barbecue by donating grills, chairs, and tables.

Town & Country Rentals are located at 190 Main St., New Milford.

: The Celtic Kitchen is a cozy deli and eatery that serves the local breakfast and lunch crowd. Owner Gerri McCaul offers an extensive line of Irish imports including candy, soda, biscuits, canned goods and frozen meats.

Celtic Kitchen is located at 366 River Rd, New Milford.

: Located right in the heart of town, and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, What's Cooking is a neighborhood favorite. Famous for their Wednesday night "All you can eat" pasta night, the Escobar brothers, Hugo, William, Miguel and Chef Oreste have been feeding New Milford for over eight years.

Whats Cooking is located at 201 Main Street, New Milford.

New Milford Deli: The New Milford Deli serves up some mighty fine sandwiches. Owner Alex Garibian and his sister, Ellen Kazanjan, have been cooking their homemade delicacies in New Milford since 1996.

Garibian had told Donna Colucci, “Anything I can do for New Milford; my door and heart is always open for organizations seeking donations.” And he did generously give to the Labor Day of Love Barbecue.

Another great example of New Milford's small businesses giving back to the community.

New Milford Deli is located at 846 River Road, New Milford

And don't forget to support our local farms. Both and Fresh and Fancy are starting to put out their wreaths and holiday plants.

Perrone's is located at 563 River Rd., New Milford. Fresh and Fancy is located at 575 River Rd., New Milford.
