Gibbs Students Send 400 Holiday Cards to Military, Families

A teacher at B.F. Gibbs School led an initiative that resulted in over 400 holiday cards to be shipped by the Red Cross.

The holidays often go hand-in-hand with family visits. Whether it be a short ride to grandma’s house or a cross country flight to be with the ones you love, the holiday season brings families together. But what about the service men and women, and the families they’ve left behind, who can’t be with the ones they love? A group of students at B.F. Gibbs School did their part to help out with the uneasy feeling that can come from that separation.

First grade teacher, Megan Farricker, led an initiative for Gibbs students to provide over 400 student-made holiday cards for the Red Cross “Holiday Mail for Heroes” program.

“Once a year, we get the joy of delivering holiday greetings to veterans, military families and active-duty service members at hospitals and installations around the world. The cards and personal messages, sent by tens of thousands of Americans, provide a welcome “touch of home” for our troops during the holiday season,” reads redcross.org.

The Red Cross has expanded the ways they can participate this year. If you don’t have the time in your day to sit and write out a card the way these Gibbs youngsters did, you can tag photos, videos or messages with the #HolidayMail on Twitter, Instagram or Vine.
