West Bergen Offers Counseling Services in Wake of Sandy Hook Shooting

Trained counselors are available to help parents/educators answer questions children have over what happened in Newtown, Conn.

West Bergen Mental Healthcare in Ridgewood is offering free counseling services to the community following the tragic school shooting on Friday in Newtown, Conn.

"We know some parents, teachers and/or community leaders may have questions about how to approach the situation and help children deal with their feelings and concerns as the days and weeks go on," the organization said in a statement Tuesday.

All community members can speak with trained child/adolescent therapists and other staff members by telephone.

"Designated staff from the West Bergen Center for Children and Youth are available to answer your questions, help parents and educators who may have questions about behaviors they may be seeing and/or help give techniques/suggestions on how best to handle this very sad situation," the statement read.

Callers do not have to be clients of the institution. The service is free. Prospective callers are instructed to call the West Bergen Center for Children and Youth at (201) 934-1160 and ask for the "warm line."
