The heatwave was the talk of the town this week, followed by Friday's brief power outages. If you stayed inside to keep cool, here is what went on in town this week. 

Zoning Board Green Lights Top Stone Church for Jewish Synagogue Space

In reversing the New Milford Zoning Official's denial, the New Milford Zoning Board approved the application of Top Stone Church, the Korean Church currently in contract for the purchase the former New Milford Synagogue at 435 River Road, recognizing its use as a pre-existing, predetermined use.  

Gadaleta Takes On Expert Testimony in United Water Hearings

Focusing on flooding, traffic and design, New Milford resident, former councilman and licensed architect, Michael Gadaleta, appeared before the New Milford Zoning Board Thursday evening to refute the testimony given by Hekemian's experts over the course of the last 17 months regarding the proposed development of the 13-acre United Water property. 

Board Of Ed Fills Drake's Vacant Seat

The New Milford Board of Education appointed Christine Giancola to fill the seat vacated by Darren Drake. Giancola will fill Drake's unexpired term through December 31, 2013. Because the Board of Education elections now take place at the same time as the general election in November, Drake's seat will appear on the ballot, along with the other three anticipated open seats currently filled by John Bigger, Chris Ryan and Judy McSweeney. 

More Than 4,000 Without Power in Teaneck, New Milford-Area

About 4,600 Public Service Electric and Gas customers were without electricity in the Teaneck and New Milford-area late Friday afternoon. More than 2,000 New Milford customers were left without electricity, some up to five hours. 

New Animal Hospital Opens in Oradell

Christian Hurst, veterinarian and owner of Animal Care of Oradell, describes his new business as "a hospital with a heart." From the portraits of rescue dogs on the wall, to the resident house dog, Roxie--a dog rescued by Hurst--lying comfortably on the floor behind the front desk, this space has been designed to make the experience of visiting the vet as stressless as possible for animals. 

Soil Remediation to Begin at New Milford High School

Approximately 18 years ago, an oil tank was removed from that area of the high school. Although the project predates the current administration and Board, it was understood that once the tank was removed and the soil was tested for contaminants, the representative from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) declared that the site was cleaned. But as it turned out, that was not the case.

Wine Festival Coming to Historic New Bridge Landing

The Bergen County Historical Society is hosting a wine festival at New Bridge Landing on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Seven New Jersey wineries will be participating in the festival and offering tastings of their wine. Those wineries are: Cava Winery, Ventimiglia Vineyard, Four Sisters Winery, Unionville Vineyards, Old York Cellars, Westfall Winery and Amalthea Cellars.
