Pharmacy Could Replace Louie’s in Teaneck

Application filed for three Cedar Lane properties

A major drug store chain could open at the recently closed Louie’s Charcoal Pit on Cedar Lane and two other adjoining properties, according to town officials.

Councilman Yitz Stern told Patch an unnamed pharmacy chain had filed an application with the town’s zoning board to build a store at the Louie’s site, an adjacent storefront and the nextdoor gas station at Cedar Lane and Elm Avenue.

A zoning board hearing on the matter would likely not be scheduled until March or February, Stern said.

"It's unfortunate that Louie’s left," he said. "These are challenging times on Cedar Lane."

Two officials confirmed a Walgreens was proposed at the Cedar Lane property, but the zoning application was not yet completed. A Walgreens spokesman said the company would not comment unless a lease had been signed.

CVS and Rite Aid representatives said they had no new stores to announce in town.

Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin said he was aware of an application, but details were unclear. Louie’s owner Dino Stamatelatos could not be immediately reached for comment.

If built, the pharmacy would become the third in the immediate area. A CVS store is located on the next block and Louie’s is across from J&J Pharmacy. Cedar Lane is also home to another CVS east of Queen Anne Road.

. In a 2010 interview, Stamatelatos said he looked to sell the landmark diner and might open another restaurant elsewhere in New Jersey.

The diner’s closing came shortly after the historic Cedar Lane Cinemas shut down and has left merchants worried about the future of Teaneck’s large shopping district.

John, Of course they do not know, Why would Louies representative tell anyone at this point. Only the property owners have the offers, they picked to go with Walgreens first because its retail and would benefit Cedar Lane. I was waiting in B. Dinelli i heard the man on his cell speaking to Louies family not to worry Walgreens is a great fit and only if town votes it down, we still have a very substantial offer from Chabad. I heard him say its a 4 story 9,000 sq ft school. I don't know who it was but he did ask the salon do you want a Walgreens or a Judaica Plaza? They all laughed, and said what do you think? This was at least 6 weeks ago.

You all are talking to yourselves...no one cares about your needs or concerns. Walgreens will be there if they want to be. If anyone really cared about the small business owners you all would RALLY instead of belly-ache and bullsh*t online! c'mon!

Hate to admit it but you're probably correct. :(

We will have a much nicer corner now, surely better than a neglected gas station and run down Louies building. My concern now is the rest of street is going to show how neglected it really is when a new beautiful corner emerges. What programs are in place to help those landlords because the tenants are not commited. Most business owners are for the most part trying to figure when to leave and what town to re-open in. They are taking the lead from Dino from Louies Charcoal who is working on a new restaurant surely not in Teaneck. I spoke to owner of Shellys and Noahs Ark he is month to month thats scarey with so many businesses getting ready to flee town. The only two i could pin down that had a lease and was staying, Veggie Heaven and dollar store. When is the council going to add a parking garage like englewood.
